Portable Media Center...

I've just got back to Seattle from a trip to Microsoft Research in the UK, the trip over to the UK was good, some interesting movies to watch, some work to do, the time flew by [pun intended]...

The trip back wasn't quite so good, in economy, couldn't sleep, no interesting movies to watch - this is exactly the time I would have liked to have a Portable Media Center - all your photos, all your music, and all your TV shows (recorded on my Media Center PC) - I have a number of other events coming up so have decided to get a Creative Labs Portable Media Center - to get this working I need to have Windows Media 10 on my Media Center, so I decided to upgrade from WM9 to WM10 yesterday.

Interestingly, I also had the "Update for XP SP2" waiting to be installed - the installation for SP2 went smoothly, but when I restarted my Media Center I couldn't watch any TV programs (live or recorded) - I had an error on screen stating that "Components or files needed to watch TV were missing or corrupt" - something in the SP2 upgrade had caused a problem - I don't know whether this was becasue I had installed WM10 before upgrading to SP2... so I uninstalled XP SP2, confirmed that the Media Center was working ok, and then re-installed SP2 - everything worked just fine, so I then installed WM10 - and again, everything was working ok.

So, the next step is to find a Creative Labs Portable Media Center... Once I get one (if I can find one) I will document the setup and "play" experience...

Don't forget to look out for the video on MSDN Channel 9 with Brett Bentsen, the Product Unit Manager for the Portable Media Center...

Mike, I saw this a bit late, anyway you posted it a bit late too. Creative just had a warehouse sales over here in Singapore, 3th-5th September. And yes, they had PMC in the fest too, was selling at S$899, usual price here is S$999. I could have help you bought one had you said it earlier =D . Anyway maybe it's cheaper to get it over there?

i love the idea of a PMC and will no doubt get one soon, but i want to wait and see what the first batch that come out are like, and work out which one is for me. i also wouldn't mind the price dropping just a little first :-)

I have a Creative PMC to play with for a few days - I also have a Media Center PC at home, so decided to sync the PMC with it - the process was painless, although converting on the fly and watching "Live TV" causes a few skips in the live programming.

the first time I used the PMC in 'anger' was this weekend - I decided to get a haircut, two of the kids were out with my wife and the other refused to leave the comfort of the couch and cartoons, so I took child and PMC along to the barbers. The PMC was fully loaded with Teen Titans and the like - a good experience.

I don't think there are that many places you can really use the PMC, you can't watch video when driving or walking, or riding a bike - I do have a radio transmitter that can plug into the PMC so I can listen to the entire CD collection in the car (which is nice) - I do have some presentations coming up in California, so the PMC will be awesome for the flight (I can catch up on the Teen Titan episodes I've missed!).
