No more Heroes ?

I’ve been thinking about how Microsoft is viewed by customers and consumers of technology – when I was “growing up” in the technology industry (many years ago, in a place far, far away [cue Star Wars music]) there were some obvious technology Heroes, BillG, Don Box, Charlie Kindel, Mike Blaszczak, and others – I thought these people were super cool, mostly because of their presentations and demos – when you look at Microsoft today, who are the Heroes that jump out at you, and why? – since Microsoft now supports such a wide set of technologies I guess the Heroes of the day are people like Scoble, Don Box, and others that communicate with customers through new technologies such as blogging, MSDN Channel 9, right ?

Well, a few people come to my mind immediately: Anders Hejlsberg, Scott Guthrie. For me, these people stand out as much for they deep knowledge as for their aproachability (is that a word?), for their strong abstract thinking as much for their practical results. Alas, I don't like Don Box that much, I think that of late, he has been doing too much thinktank-like talk for my test (what with "There is only one program and it is still being written").

I nominate Stan Lippman and Herb Sutter for their heroism in "saving C++"...i.e., working tirelessly to meld C++ and CLI. Millions of "legacy" C++ apps will be thankful when C++/CLI gets ISO/ANSI ratified.
