Portable Gaming

What portable gaming device has the following specification ?

  • Great games
  • Camera
  • Music Player
  • Movie Player
  • Messaging
  • GPS
  • GPRS
  • Bluethooth

Thinking of the PSP ? You would be wrong, this is the Gizmondo – a neat looking mobile gaming device based on Windows CE 4.2 – Just think of the possibilities when you combine games with GPS positioning – this from the Gizmondo site – The GPS in the Gizmondo opens the door to location-based games, taking the multi-player experience to a new dimension. For example, in our urban warfare game 'Colors', you are actually playing in the street you are walking down, in the real world, against competitors in streets all around you. Look over your shoulder, do you see anyone else engaged in combat?

Technically speaking, in local-based games your position is being mapped in real time by the GPS - as well as the other players' positions in the vicinity. But you don't have to worry about what is happening under the shell. All you need to know is that the Gizmondo world isn't like any other.

The specs are very impressive. I want one!
But I dont see this taking off, the problem is the appearance. This looks no where near as sexy as the psp and the gizmondo is more expensive.

Hmm, you know I am not to concerned about sexy looks, I think the important thing would be did they get Microsoft's ergonomic team involved with Design.

One of the things that people rarely seem to mention, except if I bring it up, is a Plays station you can play an hour or 2 and you know your hands hurt. An Xbox you can play for hours on end and hands and arms still feel good, Your Eyes may be a little buggy from stairing at the screen but hands feel fine. Viva La Xbox. But MS needs a little portable Xbox.

The Gizmondo was designed by the guy behind the Sinclair ZX81 and other Sinclair products. EDGE magazine had an interview with him a few months ago.

Alas, it is too little too late. I've seen the PSP and I want one of those. The Giz might have been cool a year ago...
