Windows CE 5.0 Networked Media Device Feature Pack Released.

The Windows CE 5.0 Networked Media Device Feature Pack has been released to the web today. This is the first Feature Pack release for Windows CE 5.0 - A feature pack updates the Platform Builder catalog with new operating system features without making changes to the underlying BSP/Driver model - this makes it easy for you to integrate the new Feature Pack functionality into existing or new designs.

The NMD Feature Pack adds four new components to the catalog, NMD_UI (the NMD Shell), DVR Engine (for recording and playback of TV shows), SPDIF Packetizer (Optical Audio Out), and DRM (Digital Rights Management) - The HTTP component has been updated to version 1.1, and you get a new BSP, the Intel 854 reference design.

So what is NMD? - You probably have music, photo's, and video on your home PC's - The NMD components make it simple for you to build a Windows CE 5.0 based operating system image that streams your audio, video, and photos from your Home PC's to your TV set (think of it as a Set Top Box, the functionality can also be built directly into TV sets). Your home PC needs to run Windows Media Connect v2.0, this is the media 'server' software - you get to pick and choose which files/folders are exposed from the PC to the NMD device.

Here's the Network Media Device press release and more information on WindowsForDevices

Two new tutorials have been released today - these show how to configure, build, and deploy an operating system image based on the Windows CE 5.0 Networked Media Device Feature Pack - there are two options, the first is to select a baseline operating system configuration such as Internet Appliance, you then remove the existing shell and add the NMD Shell component - dependencies are automatically added - the second option is to use the Windows CE 5.0 NMD Wizard file (XML file downloadable here - the downloads page explains where the Wizards XML file needs to be placed on your development PC) this adds a new Platform Builder Wizard that makes the configuration of a NMD device simple.

Hi Mike:

Sorry for bothering you.

I've tried download, and install the NMD package, but I can NOT make a full installation on my development machine.

There is always a dialog box titled "Install Information" popped up saying "Windows CE 5.0 Networked Media Device Feature Pack cannot install one of its required products. Contact your technical support group."

The first thought came up is that I didn't have  the latest QFE updated, so I run the WinCEPB50-Product-Update-Rollup-Armv4I.msi and tried to install the NMD package again. Still the error dialog box popped up.

The fp_nmd and 845 bsp catalog are installed during the first install session, and I can see  "NMD UI", "DVR engine", and "Intel 845DSTB" in the catalog area of my platform builder.

Actually, I still followed your eHowto tutorial to build a image by replacing standard shell with NMD UI. The build process is OK, but the final image is a total blank with only mouse cursor.

Did I miss anything or maybe I shall uninstall the NMD package first?

Hi,

Thanks for the report, I've passed this over to the Feature Pack setup team who are now investigating.

If anyone else is having problems please let me know.

Thanks,

Hi Mike
I've got a similar setup problem:
Setup reports that the file 'CE_1.cab' is corrupt and cannot be used.
It fails on the file '<winceroot>\PUBLIC\DIRECTX\OAK\LIB\X86\RETAIL\urlobj.pdb'

I downloaded the file again but it did not solve the problem.

Hi Mike,

Networked Media Device is cool in Windows CE.
Is there any same feature in Windows Mobile? Application, Demo program , or .NET component?

Thanks,
Jacky

wcs and dvescovi,

I have the same error too. ("Windows CE 5.0 Networked Media Device Feature Pack cannot install one of its required products. Contact your technical support group.")

To solve, you need to download ALL the CPU QFE's update files based on the operating system support you have included with your Windows CE 5.0 install.

Just browse to C:\<WINCEROOT>\PUBLIC\COMMON\OAK\LIB and see which CPU folders are listed. Download the QFE's related and try again. (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=bf17d6b0-4716-494b-9018-7deee9b91832&displaylang=en)

It worket to me. :-)

The Windows CE 5.0 Networked Media Device Feature Pack (we really need shorter product names!) team have confirmed that you need all QFE's installed before the NMD bits will install correctly.

If this is failing for you can you install the QFE's and let me know whether the installer now works correctly for you.

Thanks,

- Mike

After that, I downloaded the armv4i pack (WinCEPB50-Product-Update-Rollup-Armv4I.msi) and I tryied to install again and I had success.
I just followed the Rafael´s advice.
