However... I can't help but think it's unfortunate to be doing this on the server side. Clearly the only appropriate place to do this work is on the client. Silverlight 2.0 makes it incredibly easy to run code on the client, but then it offers APIs that only talk to the server, and/or only accept complex file formats. A bit of a conflicted technology right now, but I trust they'll work it out eventually.

By the way, you know that Stegman's PNG encoder actually uses Mandelbrot generated on the client as part of its demo, right? :)

re: Deep Zoom, MultiScaleTileSource and the Mandelbrot Set

Hi Tom

I don't entirely agree with you - I'm struggling to think of many client-side generation applications. I can see why the team went the route they did. It supports the normal mode of operation for Deep Zoom - ie an image pyramid from Deep Zoom composer. Deep Earth is another good example of server-side generation. I can see more applications for the technology in server-side tile generation.

For my particular example it's a shame I couldn't do it client side but the fact there's no native bitmap manipulation in Silverlight 2 means the Deep Zoom guys would have been building a capability that's unlikely to have seen much use.

And no, I hadn't seen Joe's demo until you mentioned it :-). I should just have "borrowed" his Mandelbrot code and wrapped it in a MultiScaleTile Source! Thanks for pointing it out to me.

Best regards

Mike

This explaination is really appreciated. The MSDN documentation on this subject is rather light to say the least.

You post answered most of my questions posted here.

http://silverlight.net/forums/p/21934/76799.aspx#76799

However there is one outstanding questions, what is tilelevel "-1"?

Also, has anyone tried an irregular image size (eg 33554432 x 16777216)?

Thanks,
