  • Pat Helland Tribute - South Oz fanclub salutes legend

A small bunch of Microsoftees tucked away in a tiny part of the land of OZ will sorely miss one of their finest sources of inspiration - Mr Pat Helland.  We have had the privilege of hearing Pat on several occasions, and each of us think differently as a result.  Pat’s ‘metropolis  has caused me to change the way I look at my job here at Microsoft.  Other members of our small team like kirk and Andy are wrestling hard with big issues around communicating the value of the Microsoft platform, SOA and wisdom drawn from ‘how buildings learn’.

From my (infrastructure architect) point of view, I hope we can all continue to learn from Pat's example, from his past work and excellent communication skills to his current move which will do much to sharpen the edge of the tools with which we can change the world.

Go Pat - good on ya mate!

  • Commoditize your Infrastructure

    Commoditize your Infrastructure

The ART of getting value from ‘commodity’ Microsoft platform.

There is a lot of potential value to be gained from the integration built into the products that make up the Microsoft Platform.  But, quite frankly, knowing how to realise that potential value is a bit of a ‘black-art’.

The Key lies in understanding how to ‘commoditize’ both server and desktop infrastructure.

    Servers

With servers, the trick is to have a simple architecture that will balance service provision against security and require minimal changes to default server configuration. The Windows Server System Reference Architecture – WSSRA  is a great place to start.

    Desktops

For desktops the secret lies in achieving a balance between the retail experience and manageability – BDD is the place to start. A healty dose of commonsense and thought leadership are required.  Think commodity, vanilla, standard, retail.
