I just ran across your debugging QA post and find it very useful for most questions. I am not sure if you know about Debugging White paper http://www.gotdotnet.com/team/csharp/learn/whitepapers/howtosolvedebuggerproblems.doc. It is pretty good as well.
I have one specific scenario that I am not sure If I can even use Remote debugging for.

I have a have host machine running WinXP Pro and VS.NET 2003 installed on that machine. VirtualPC is used to launch instance of Windows 2003 Standard Server / SharePoint Server 2003. Now, I need to debug my webpart which is ASP.NET process. I can see the process of the Server and when I try to attach to the server it fails. I made all of the changes I can possible find about. I modified Policies on both machines.

Is it possible to debug in my scenario? And if it is then how do I do it?

Case 4: (You do not have permission to debug the server)

You are pointing to an alias of the machine, and the integrated windows authentication fails.

(e.g. I replace dead machineA with machineB, but the DNS is set up so they have the same IP address. I tried to debug http://machineA/myservice, which failed; setting the properties to point to http://machineB/myservice worked.)

Once I installed compuware devpartner 7.1, asp.net debug seesion could not start. I uninstalled it, then everything was fine.

I was getting the following error:
Server side-error occurred on sending debug HTTP request.

and Yan-Hong Huang posted the solution in DotNet247 by pointing me to http://support.microsoft.com/?id=306005

my problem was that I had two frameworks installed and the newest framework was the one beign called by IIS, but Visual Studio is using the old framework, so I had to reinstall the old ASPNet framework.

so I just had to remap:
"%windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\version\aspnet_regiis.exe" -i

and register the following executable
regsvr32 %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\version\aspnet_isapi.dll

Additional reason for :

"You do not have permissions to debug the server. Verify that you are a member of the 'Debugger Users' group on the Server."

This can also be caused by a "corrupted" user profile/account.

If, after you have granted your (domain) account all rights up to & including domain & local machine administrator and have also given the ASPNET & your account full control over all inetpub directories on the server and worked through all the other possibilities given above then this _may_ be the problem.

If you suspect it is. Get your SysAdmin to create a copy of your domain account with same default rights & permissions. All that should then be necessary is to add this 'joepublic' account to the web server machine groups :

- VS Developers -- Allows joe to create a project.
- Debugger Users -- Gets past the 'debugger user' warning.
- Administrators -- Gets past the 'access denied' warning.

If your joepublic user is able to run asp.net projects in debug then have your SysAdmin backup any domain account data you hold on domain servers (inc. Exchange) and have your account deleted & recreated. Tedious.

I have the following error, read the answer. I uninstalled Visual Studio .Net and then installed it after IIS. Still the problem is not gone. Could not do the other thing to "register “aspnet_isapi.dll” with “aspnet_regiis.exe –i” " because I do not know how to do that. Please guide me.

You may also want to refer to the ASP.NET and ATL Server debugging topic in the online documentation. Would you like to disable future attempts to debug ASP.NET pages for this project?

If you have an XP Pro or W2K Pro machine, you may need to think about the order of installation between VS7 and IIS. If you install IIS after VS7, you will get this error. In this case, please register “aspnet_isapi.dll” with “aspnet_regiis.exe –i”.

thanks for the question.
you should be able to find out "aspent_regiis.exe" file under "<System Drive>:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\framework\v1.x.xxxx". you just need to change directory there and run "aspnet_regiis.exe -i" to register IIS thing.

Thanks for the answer.
I changed the already installed v1.0.3705 to v1.0.3706 and tried to write and run "aspnet_regiis.exe -i" in the run application in the start menu but it said Windows cannot find aspnet_regiis.exe -i. Make sure u typed the name correctly.
what can i do, please help.

there should be at least "aspnet_isapi.dll".
BTW, you can search "aspnet*.*" under folder. it is very strange to see that you don't have the file.
if anything doesn't work, please repair your .Net Framework setup.

Unable to start debugging on the web server. The debugger component on the server failed to connect to the local machine. error code: 0x800405a4

I get this all of the time with Windows 2003 server. Normally after it freaks out and kills all my debug sessions and I have to restart. The only way to fix it is to uninstall the remote deubgging and reinstall.

What is really causing this and how do I fix it without reinstalling?
