ARC Thoughts

This is a blog on architecture. Focus of this blog is to help technical decision makers with upcoming technologies so they can make informed decisions. Since I'm passionate about retail industry and payments industry, there will some bias towards those areas.
Retail Architecture

Hello,

Welcome! My name is Moin Moinuddin and I'm part of the Architecture Strategy team at Microsoft focusing on the Retail vertical. I'm passionate about technology and retail industry. So you'll hear from me regularly on how emerging technology can help retailers solve their business problems.

Architect in a vertical industry is a loosely defined title. I think there is someone at any software development organization that makes decisions on overall design and architecture of the solution. It may be a Director of development or VP of development or CTO or truly an architect. In my opinion titles don’t matter, what matters is where the decision making responsibility resides. My focus is to reach out to the Technical Decision Makers (TDMs) in the retail industry. So if you are a TDM working for an Independent Software Vendor (ISV) focused on providing solutions to retail customers or a TDM at a retail customer then my blog is aimed at helping you in making informed decisions.

My focus will be on,

a. Providing architectural guidance for TDMs at retail focused independent software vendors (ISVs) and retail customers

b. Educating TDMs about Microsoft platform capabilities specifically focusing on the upcoming technologies such as Web  2.0, SaaS, WCF (Windows Communication Foundation), WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation), WF (Windows Workflow Foundation), BTS 2006, Office 12, etc

c. Educating TDMs on standards in the retail industry and how Microsoft is participating and helping in this area.

d. Providing technical content for better decision making

Following the above theme I recently published an article working with my co-worker Atanu Banerjee on management in retail. As the edge is becoming critical, how do you manage the edge using Microsoft tools? If you have not already seen it, please review the article here and let me know your feedback.

I love to hear from you and connect with you. I know to some extent what the retail community is looking for from Microsoft; however it is always reaffirming and refreshing to hear from you. Please let me know, what kind of architectural guidance you are looking for from Microsoft.

Watch out for more news and technical content focused on retail vertical.

The formal title of "Architect" does matter to those of us who have invested eight years in the study, internship and rigorous testing to be legally able to refer to ourselves as such.  The title has become a cultural descriptor of one who creates or organizes which is basically accurate.
