Cingular 2125 Wifi and AKU2

So it has been confirmed that the WiFi Radio in the 2125 does NOT exist. So that means there is not a reghack that will let you turn it on. Sad to hear :(

Also it has been confirmed that AKU2 is in the process of being certified for the 2125. So the MSFP (Messaging and Security Feature Pack) should be here soon.

SmartPhone GPRS/Edge tethering via USB

Some people have been asking about how to tether (GPRS/Edge) with their Windows Mobile 5 SmartPhone via USB.

Well the steps I provided at http://blogs.msdn.com/mpoulson/archive/2006/01/17/514017.aspx are still valid but you will need to install the USB modem. HTC has been nice enough to provide the .inf file. So here it is http://www.mikepoulson.com/smartphone/USBMDM.INF.

Install the modem then follow the other steps.

Smartphone dialing 911 even when Locked?

Modify the regkey HKLM\Security\ECall with your fav reg editor.

It is a multi-Value string with the default values of 911, 112, 08, and 999. Just remove the ones you do not want to be called.

If you are getting an error (like Error: unable to perform this operation) when attempting to modify this regkey try installing this cab (which will just remove 911 from the list above).

Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone as GPRS/Edge Modem

These are the steps to setup your smartphone to connect to lets say Cingular's WAP network with Dialup networking (DUN). This is also known as tethering. I have the MediaNet unlimited plan and would recommend it for anyone doing this (don’t want a big cell phone bill).

I will use it via Bluetooth on my Windows Server 2k3 SP1 machine (should work on XP SP2 also)

Once you have your Bluetooth modem installed do the steps below

Open the BT modem from the control panel of the PC (Control Panel -> Phone and Modem Options -> Modems Tab ->Properties button)
Go to the Advanced tab and add (without quotes, case sensitive) "+CGDCONT=1,"IP","WAP.CINGULAR"
Save and close that

you can create a new DUN connection

Phone Number: *99#
Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM (this is case sensitive)
Password: CINGULAR1 (case Sensitive)

I got 115kb/s from my office. Enjoy. This was hacked together from data from a bunch of sites found using my Fav Search engine (will go nameless)

There are a few regkeys of interest for some people.

These are known for the tornado and faraday based smartphones (like my Cingular 2125).

If you have an EDGE phone and EDGE service is available in your area but you never see the "E" icon (only "G" for GPRS) then this regkey might be set
- HKLM\Drivers\builtin\RIL\EnableDifferGprsEdgeIcon (set to 1 to show diff icons, 0 to only show G)
Want your GPRS/Edge to auto disconnect (saves battery)?
- HKLM\Drivers\builtin\RIL\GPRSAutoDetach (set to 1 to auto disconnect)

Storing your email on your SD card (Smart Phone WM5)

I have my 2125 (aka HTC Tornado, aka HTC Faraday, running Windows Mobile 5) and one of the things I needed to do was to store my email messages and attachments on my Mini-SD card.

I posted about an app that one could install that would do this a few weeks ago. But that app is broken (sets the wrong reg key).

So I thought I would just post the reg Keys that one needs to change to get outlook mail to store on their mini-sd

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\MAPI

AttachPath String “\storage card\\mail\\attachments” (no quotes)

PropertyPath string “\storage card\\mail” (no quotes)

Some people have reported that double slashes dont work for them. So if it does Pocket Outlock does not load after setting these keys you can try them with only one slash.

My new Cingular 2125 SmartPhone

It has been one week from when I got my 2125 smart phone. It was my first smart phone and so far I like it. The few things/issues that have come up are

It took 70 on the phone with Cingular to start service with them. I was a T-mobile customer but due to a dead spot on Capital Hill in Seattle I decided to change.
I found that if you do not know what you are doing using a smart phone could be a huge pain. I came from using my T610 (which I hated) and a HP 4150 PPC
Cingular's web site attempts to sell you "GoodLink" for ~$39.99 for unlimited data and a 99.99 startup fee when you only need MediaNet unlimited (about 19.99 and not setup fee)
As soon I as find out if the WiFi hardware is included in the HTC tornado-like phone
Setting up all my numbers as contacts in Outlook

Things that I like about my new phone

EDGE is fast
Access to Email all the time
Access to Internet (www.drinkboy.com comes in handy (I hope to talk to the owner and get a Smart Phone UI soon))
FeedME RSS reader
About the same size as T610 (minus the hump)

Yesterday I went to the Cingular store in Bellevue square Mall and asked when they would get a 2125 in stock and how much they cost (to see if they where cheaper). They said they did not have any till I told them I currently had T-Mobile. Then they had a few in stock. So if you want one you can trick them into telling you the truth.

When I asked Cingular for the Unlock code for the phone (I told them I travel International) they said I need to be a customer for 90 days before they will give me the unlock code.
