Another MSDN blogger talking search

Published 29 August 05 04:13 PM

Andy Pennell has a pretty thoughtful posting on his blog about some of the problems with relevance and the hard truth about Google.   I have had some offline discussion with Andy about what we are doing to improve search, but I still encouraged him to post his complaint.  I believe that we need to bend our efforts to deliver the best possible search experience for the customer and it is clear from customers' current responses that we are not doing everything we should.   However,  the future is brighter. We are aware of the problems, and working on a strategy that will hopefully improve the overall relevance problem and provide better performance than today.  I don't expect the changes to come easily or quickly, but a response is on the way.

Could you supply more details? I like many programmers like to dig and details don't bite me at all.

In addition, many of us use your wonderful service and would love to improve it. Post ideas and that way everyone can discuss them and you can get the best of all worlds. Maybe some of us have some great ideas for the search or could give feedback on your ideas.

Has anyone started internal blogging so people can callaborate across groups on ideas to get the best of all worlds without worry of legal issues? I think this topic could be discussed without going to this level but the potential "thought mill" blogging presents would definitely be useful there too.

I think the next decade will see a bunch of technologies including blogging converging into an overall corporate knowledge management strategy.

Shaun,

I totally agree with you about trying to encourage a collabotative process. I really want to get feedback on how to improve MSDN search. I think one way we can do that while not getting into legal problems is to regularly release betas to get your feedback. For instance, I have a beta available on http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/searchbeta. It is the beta of our filtered search. I would love to hear specifically about people's opinions of the filter categories, and if they get better results when using the filters. Also I would like to hear about any additional categories that might make sense. We are working on finalizing the 1.0 version of this "filtered search" and I want get feedback now while I can still incorporate the ideas into the design.

Thanks for the feedback

Why you gotta be talkin' smack about Google?

I'd love to see some more details too, for collaboration. How's Redmond treating Jeremy, besides these search issues?

The MSDN frameset kills me. How about some AJAX power, like Google maps?

I think it would work better if you put it in a database.

Why can't you edit these things? It should have an edit feature.

Why can I only post to this message? Is it a feature or a bug?

I agree. The way it works now, it's more like REDO ... <SIGH>It needs to be edit</SIGH> ....

I see what you mean. But what we really need is something that will automatically translate all of this. For free.

Well, Sorry guys I am no longer working on Ladybug... I am the MSDN Search PM. Yes, that means that I compete with google (for lack of a better term), but no I won't criticize them. They have a great search and relevance is the key to success in this space. I haven't had a chance to post to my blog in a couple of weeks, because I am working on a release that will improve our relevance and support RTM of VS2005. But I have been dafting a new post I will probably submit tonight. No I don't have sitra's umbrella, but I see that as blessing since it was a curse. Sorry that our blog software doesn't offer all the functionality you desire. Jeremiah Andrick MSDN Search PM MSDN Technet Product Group
