MSDN Subscriber Downloads is changing

3/5/08 UPDATE: We did not launch the new platform last week as we had expected to. We decided we should delay because the data re-architecting and validation was taking longer than we had anticipated. Additionally we identified a few usability issues we felt should be addresed before the v1.0 launch. We don't have a new launch date yet, but might have one by the end of this week. Our goal is to make sure we deliver an improved customer experience when we do launch, and we did not feel releasing last week would have accomplished that, and could have provided a worse customer experience.

4/7/08 UPDATE: It is coming this week (mid week)!

In February we will launch the biggest update to the MSDN Subscriber Downloads experience yet. We’re making it a lot easier and faster to find your downloads and access your Product Keys, and we’re adding new features to help with exploring available content.

Better organized - Easily find the exact download you’re looking for, with all product versions organized by family

Logical layout - Access your Product Keys directly alongside your software downloads

See the MSDN Subscriber Downloads and Product Keys walkthrough for a preview of what’s coming, and to find out how to give us feeback.

MSDN AA Administrators that access downloads and product keys via http://msdn2.microsoft.com/subscriptions will also see all the new functionality.

Note: Product keys depicted in screen shots of walkthrough have been modified and are not "real" product keys. I will add a note to the pages tomorrow, but I appreciate someone asking me about that - thanks!

The MSDN Magazine (print delivery) in Canada (and elswehere outside of the US) does not have a subscription cost FOR SUBSCRIBERS, but does incur shipping costs from the US.

To set this up, go to http://msdn2.microsoft.com/subscriptions and sign in to Windows Live ID and go to the "Manage My Subscription" page. The last link in the benefit list will launch you off to the magazine distribution site. BE SURE YOU ALLOW POP UPS at least temporarily to get there. You can also click the Magazine link from the Subscriptions Home Page, but again allow pop ups.

Would it be possible to keep the old versions of software on MSDN available for download?  Every once in a while, we get a request to recover some piece of data, or want to test some procedure on an old version of Windows, but it seems that this software (e.g. Exchange 2000, Windows 2000) has been pulled from MSDN subscriber downloads, around the time that 2007 editions started appearing.  Yeah, we can probably find a copy of most of this somewhere, but it would be a lot nicer to have this all still on MSDN.

Just a thought.

Does this apply TechNet Subscriber Downloads as well?

Joe - generally we do keep older versions of software available on subscriber downloads, except for cases where we have to remove them for legal reasons like the Java settlement. That is the case for some of the products you have asked about. The MSDN Subscriptions FAQ at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/aa948864.aspx has some information about removed products.

Philipp - yest this applies to TechNet Subcriber Downloads as well.
