Worldwide Telescope - Reach for the stars and beyond

Microsoft Research launched the Worldwide Telescope today. The telescope is a free application that aggregates high resolution images from telescopes around the world. Reach out to the universe like never before – see close-ups of galaxies, nebulae, planets, and remnants of an exploded supernova! The telescope is set in a cool UI that allows you to surf the sky on your own, visit specific features or take a guided tour. You can view the same image through various light filters. If your child is working on a science project, they can create their own video tour of the universe.

I’ve spent half a day playing with it – it’s just too cool. Try it out.

Visual Studio & SQL Virtual Labs on Channel 9

We have given the Virtual Lab page on Channel 9 a long overdue update with fresh labs for Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008. Most of the labs are the 30-minute Virtual Lab Express but we also have a few longer 90-minute labs up there as well.

Virtual Labs are a great way to test drive new software online without having to download the bits or dedicate test hardware. Based on Virtual Server, the hands-on labs let you follow the guided lab manual or play with the server software in a sandbox environment.

I had them strip off all of the registration pages from the Channel 9 content which will make it easier to go into the labs. I’ve trying to streamline our backend so we don’t require registration from some of the labs and the on-demand webcasts – but that’s a story for another day.

Microsoft Synchronization Services for ADO.NET makes building applications for occasionally connected environments a logical extension of building applications where you can count on a consistent network.  Rather than simply replicating a database and its schema, the Synchronization Services application programming interface (API) provides a set of components to synchronize data between data services and a local store. Applications are increasingly used on mobile clients, such as laptops and devices,  that do not have a consistent or reliable network connection to a central server. It is crucial for these applications to work against a local copy of data on the client. Join us for this session as we introduce Synchronization Services and how you can build applications that use the services. Presenter: Marc Schweigert
