I agree with the author's skepticism about the potential success of Android. It seems like the customer's needs are not being addressed with the the >">G1, a.k.a. the Google Phone.

The author's statement that the "biggest thing to bear in mind is that this phone was not primarily designed to solve a problem that you, the consumer, are having. Rather it was designed to solve a problem that Google has—namely, the need to keep feeding more and more people into the maw of Google's online advertising machine."

The success of the iPhone, which has been mammoth, is a direct result of Apple's insistence on complete control of the possible points of failure and giving the consumer what it really wants. The gap in Google's strategy is that it fails on both fronts.
