another reason I like working for Microsoft

I love my job in so many ways. It's cool to work on Mac products, especially ones that millions of people use every day. But it's also pretty nifty to work for Microsoft. There are a lot of perks to working here. I'll wax poetic about most of that some other time.

One of the really cool things about working here is that we see a stream of really cool speakers. The MS Research speaker series alone gets at least ten speakers every month, judging by the email announcements I receive. And down here at this outpost we call SVC, we have our own speaker series.

Today, the speaker at SVC is one that sets my little Mac-lovin' heart a-flutter. Woz is coming here in support of his new book, iWoz: From Computer Geek to Cult Icon. I was originally scheduled to be on a flight right now, but you know that I just had to change my flights when I got this announcement.

It looks like he's doing a pretty reasonable tour for this new book. Check out his appearance schedule to see if he's coming to your area. (Sorry, but there only appear to be US appearances right now.) And his appearance schedule looks a lot cooler than the average book tour. He's doing The Colbert Report, NPR's Science Friday on Talk of the Nation, something with The History Channel, an appearance at the Commonwealth Club, something at Macworld Expo (yay!!!), and City Arts and Lectures from KQED public radio. So if he's not coming to you, you'll still be able to hear some interesting stuff from him. Science Friday has a podcast, so you can download that and listen.

Because I like you guys, I'll write up a post about seeing Woz in the flesh and post it over at Mac Mojo.

OK, when I read the line "we see a stream of really cool speakers. The MS Research " - I immediately thought of, well, speakers. As in boxes that make noise.

Then I couldn't remember if MS actually made speakers, so I went on a little search of their website, and, well, they don't.

But it was funny.

I certainly hope that you didn't get through the whole post while thinking this, unless there's some kind of ultra-cool Woz speaker out there that I'm not aware of. ;)

Hey Nadyne, why are the other MacBU bloggers at MacMojo so lame?  Like they can write a few words like you do when you're busy, but it looks really really lame when a whole team of them has nothing to say for days on end.

It's because I'm cooler than they are.  (Heh.  My  manager is one of the other bloggers, so I should be careful here ... )

We've got new bloggers over there, so they're not used to doing it.  I think that this means that they think that it's a bigger time investment than it really is (I tend to write my posts by grabbing a couple of minutes here or there until I've got the whole thing down).  I also think that the huge response that we got to our first week is a bit off-putting to a new blogger: there's suddenly a lot of pressure to perform.

Well they could learn a lot from you  about how to perform, under pressure :) Did you say hi to Woz from me? :)

Seeeeeeeeeeeee, I'm trying to break them into fast stream of blogging on MacMojo, but they're scarred of me and don't post my comments, wimps...

That's not true.  We moderate comments on that blog to avoid comments spam.  IIRC, the guy who's doing the moderation is in a class this week, so he's not able to approve them as quickly as he generally does.  But looking over there right now, there's only two comments that haven't been approved today.

Nadyne, who are you arguing with? ;-)

I look forward to your remarks about Woz.  I've seen him speak before - he talks very quickly, barely pausing for breath. The passion and vision he continues to have is incredible.  He has my firm respect and he's definitely in the top 5 of famous people with whom I'd want to sit down and have a chat.

[cut the trolling]

Asam, you're being a jerk again, both here and in Mac Mojo.  Stop it, or I'm going to start removing all of your comments again.

Oh, so now it's being a Jerk if you critise Microsoft?

# re: another reason I like working for Microsoft

If you want to be critical, go ahead.  I don't care about that.  I'm sick of your evil comments.  If that's the best you can manage in the name of criticism, I weep for the future of intellectual discourse.

# re: another reason I like working for Microsoft

Its not my fault Microsoft has a major image problem around the world and with it customers. It doesn't matter what I think about Microsoft, I can always find alternative ways to working on my documents but what you should deal with is not me, but your own customers and think why they consider Microsoft and evil company. Not many global companies that can claim to have such a base and be the source of consipiracy theories, nor be so despised for being international law breakers. If you choose to conduct business with disregard for international law and consider your self above international law, then expect to be considered and treated like a criminal evil company......

# re: another reason I like working for Microsoft

Thanks for entirely missing my point.

I am fully aware of whatever 'image problem' Microsoft might have amongst a certain subset of people.  I can't do anything about that directly.  The only thing that I can do is focus on my job and on making the products that I work on as usable and useful as possible.

But the image of Microsoft is orthogonal to your trolling.  If the only thing that you have to contribute is your evil blathering, then I'm not going to bother with you anymore.

If you're willing to behave like a functional member of society, then I'm happy to continue having a discussion with you.  If you're just interested in trolling, then take it elsewhere.  (And Mac Mojo isn't an elsewhere that's appropriate, just in case you might be confused.)

Nadyne, you're defending Microsoft on a Sunday, get a life. I do this for fun, not work....

# re: another reason I like working for Microsoft

But Nadyne, without mindless repetitive blathering, the internet would be little else besides porn and myspace.

And then where would we be?

# re: another reason I like working for Microsoft

No, Asam, I'm spending some amount of my Sunday to tell you to stop being such an unending twit.  Which isn't necessarily that much better, but that's a separate discussion.
