Office 2008 12.0.1 update now available

As my boss mentioned on Mac Mojo in his Office 2008 update post, we've been working on the 12.0.1 update. It hit our servers this morning, and you can download it now.

What's in it? The complete list is here. My favourite fixes are:

  • permissions issue fixed - no more 502! (which means that you won't have to follow Schwieb's directions that are in this linked post)
  • stability and performance improvements all around
  • Excel's support for second displays is improved (important to me because I'm always on two displays when I'm in my office)
  • Entourage plays notification sounds in Leopard
  • Entourage sync improvements

You can either download it directly from the link above, update when Microsoft AutoUpdater does its job, or open the Help menu in any Office application and select Check for Updates.

Go forth and update!

I'm very sorry, but in fact you should feel sorry at MacBu for not fixing the most important bugs in office 2008.

Is it a joke or is it just the way you want PowerPoint to behave:

from one text slide to another text slide or even to let some text appear on an already showed slide takes up to 5 seconds ?!?

come on how do you use that stiff in your professional day-life?

When is that being fixed? Really It makes people angry like hell. Stop ignoring you customers request. An make office 2008 behave the way WE want it to behave and not how you manage it to behave at your best (which is rubbish).

@disappointed - I'm not seeing this kind of issue, and I do use PowerPoint quite a lot.  I just

You might want to post to our Product Forums to see if you can get some help, or contact Microsoft tech support.  Remember, you get two free tech support calls with your purchase of Office 2008.

If you want to try out the Product Forums, make sure you post lots of details.  For example, post your OS version (10.4.11, 10.5.2, ...), version of PowerPoint (11.3.5, 12.0.1, ... ), what hardware you're running on (PPC vs Intel is the most important thing here, but other hardware specs will help too), how big your slide deck is (both in terms of number of slides and size of the deck (x MB), and what kinds of things you've got in your deck (all bullets and text? lots of pictures? lots of charts?).  Providing that kind of information will help you get better help with your problem.

This update installer is purported to fix the 502 permissions errors. However, it does leave a number of files with the incorrect 502 owner. Namely every file in /Library/Fonts/Microsoft/ and a number of files in /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008.

Two bugs that I've found:

1) Exposé (the F9 key) doesn't work right with Word 2008. The light blue square doesn't select the window(s) of Word correctly or at all.

2) The Font "Bauhaus 93" when validated in the Font Book shows some kind of errors, but it's all ok, and I don't know who could solve this small glitch, you or Apple.

I have Office 2008 updated to 12.0.1 and Leopard 10.5.2 on iMac/Intel.

Thanks Nadyne.

It also doesn't fix my issue where i have a column configured with £ signs, I save the document, open it back up and it has removed the £ sign and put a $ there instead!!!!!!  Everytime, like clock work.

Arrrgggghhhhh!!!!  Very annoying, happens on 3 of my Macs - how did this miss QA in the first place?  Was it just a case that 2008 was rushed to meet it's deadline?

Thank you Nadyne you are the only one from MacBu obviously reading the comments.

With regard to the powerpoint issues it is very surprising that you do not have any performance problems as there appear plenty of messages on various forums.

I have a small PP presentation of 8 Mb.

Including some small pictures and graphs that were pasted as images (paste special: png) that's all. It makes 20 slides in total so really not a big deal.

It takes on average 5 seconds before powerpoint shows up the next step (additional text on a slide or the next slide) which is not acceptable during a presentation I think you agree on that.

During presentation I only leave powerpoint run (no other programs running). I use leopard 10.5.2 on a C2D 2.3GHz MBP machine so not the oldest mac you can find within your customers configuration.

I hope you can use that information and solve that problem. It is really a big issue as it is in general for any office program with "large files" 20 Mb word file or 1000 lines excel data sheets....

PS powerpoint 2007 is not much better during handling but at least it shows presentations correctly (upon click something happens)!

@disappointed - I just realised that I forgot the link to the Product Forums.  The Product Forums are much more likely to be able to help you out than I am. :)

I was just looking at my upgraded Office components and all of them say 12.0.1 EXCEPT Entourage... in the about Entourage window it still says 12.0.0.

Is this accurate?  Is it a mess up in the listed version number or did mine somehow not upgrade?  I tried to run the updater again but it didn't work.

Entourage is not working after the Update - it keeps trying to update the Password Keychain and gets in a loop.

Sorry, folks, but I'm probably not going to be much help in the way of tech support.  If I were a tech support guru, I'd be doing that instead of user experience. :)

Check out my replies to Disappointed above -- the Product Forums are going to be a MUCH better way for you to get help than to ask me.  I'm not trying to blow you off, I'm just trying to point you towards a resource that's going to be able to give you help.  First check the Product Forums to see if someone else has already asked your question and had it answered.  If not, post something new to see where that gets you.  If that doesn't work, or if you don't have time to check out the forums, you should give tech support a call.  You get two free tech support incidents when you buy Office 2008, and you probably haven't used them already!

Upgraded -- and now Entourage is not updating my inbox! :(

I rebooted, rebuilt the Entourage DB, reboot again, and still no luck. It connects, says it is updating my Inbox, but mail that I know is there (via webmail) is not syncing down.

I'd recommend holding off for a few days, if you need a minor thing like working email.

@no_mail_for_me - Are you in an Exchange environment?  If so, have you tried following the steps that are outlined in the "I'm not receiving email or items in my Exchange account" help topic?

# re: Office 2008 12.0.1 update now available

@nadyne: great tip, much appreciated! Option #3 (Empty the Cache on Inbox) fixed it; my oversize mailbox is now re-syncing (over VPN, sigh). My inbox is easily >2000 msgs, if that is any help.

The question remains why was it necessary, as mail was flowing fine before the upgrade, and I definitely closed Entourage & Reminders before upgrading.

It would be nice if there was some hint from Entourage when a sync with Exchange fails -- from the UI, it looks like Inbox sync succeeded, and there were no error messages available via Console.app.

Thanks again.

# re: Office 2008 12.0.1 update now available

@no_mail_for_me - Glad to help. :)

Entourage didn't know that the sync had failed, so no message.  When Entourage does know that the sync failed for some reason, you'll see an exclamation in the lower right corner of the Entourage screen, and you can see all of the details about the failure by clicking on Window -> Error Log in Entourage.

In the future, you might want to check out the Entourage public forum (I've linked to our forums above) or the Entourage Talk mailing list:

http://www.entourage.mvps.org/support_options/subtalk.html

The folks who watch those forums are more knowledge about troubleshooting than I am.  I only pointed you towards an existing help topic, so if you have questions beyond what you can find in the help, those resources are probably going to get you better answers than I'll be able to provide.  :)
