Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

Excellent news today for users of Office 2007 who want to create and edit files in languages that are not provided by default with their version of Office, or to change the Menus/User Interface to another language. In this version of Office, there is no need to buy the complete set of proofing tools for dozens of languages, as was the case before. Single Language Packs, which include the proofing tools for one given language (spell-checker, thesaurus, grammar checker, etc.) are now available from 10 Online stores worldwide (with more to come). Check this out:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/suites/FX102113661033.aspx

You can click on the link “Buy a single language pack now”. You then just have to pick your country from the drop-down list and you will be directed to the most appropriate store, as a function of your location. Some of the stores are localized for the market or the region. You can then select the language you are interested in and click the “Buy Now” button.

Remember that, if you have an English version of Office, it comes with the French and Spanish proofing tools, so you don’t need to buy a speller, a grammar checker or a thesaurus for these languages. Every version of Office comes with a set of “companion languages” (see http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/suites/HA102113701033.aspx for more information about which proofing tools come with what language version of Office). But if you wish to write and spell-check a document in German, in Dutch, in Japanese, in Russian, or in Italian, for instance, you are now able to directly purchase and download the tools from Office Online for a single language for $24.95 only.

If you want to know more about Language Packs for the 2007 Microsoft Office system, check out the Frequently Asked Questions on the Office site.

For Office Single Language Packs, you install both the UI and Proofing tools to your PC.  Once installed you have the option of using one or both of the features.  This means you can decide to use the proofing tools only without changing the language of your user interface. With the Multi-language Pack (MLP), you will receive 3 DVDs – two have all the single languages packs and the 3rd DVD has proofing tools only for all the languages.

Given the feedback we’ve seen on this blog, on newsgroups and elsewhere, I’m sure you’ll be delighted to read this excellent piece of news!

Additional note added on 11 April 2007:

At the moment, only the US Office Online web site has info on, and a link to purchase, Office Language Packs. This is at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/suites/FX102113661033.aspx. When you click the Buy a single language pack now button, you are directed to the US store where you can purchase any of the available language packs that have been released and added to the store.  However, purchasing from this store requires a US-based billing address, and the product information is only presented in English.

Over time, these Office Online pages will be localized and published in all of the Office Online Languages, and linked to their corresponding stores – allowing customers to purchase in Euros, and to see product info in other languages.  Customers who are not in the US, but wish to purchase language packs now, can use this URL - http://buy.trymicrosoftoffice.com/buyus/connect.aspx?app=langpack&cmd=office_product. This allows them to select their home (billing) country which, in turn, redirects them to the most appropriate store based on their geography.  It also allows them to see product info in some additional languages using the drop-down menu near the upper right corner.

Note posted on 28 June 2007:

Customers can only purchase products in the online store for their region (accessible from the localized Office Online sites). Otherwise, credit card validation will fail. So if you are from outside the USA, customers should not try to purchase these Single Language Packs from a US site. For Western Europe, for instance, the purchase site can be directly accessed via http://buy.trymicrosoftoffice.com/buyemea1. For the rest of Europe, the URL is http://buy.trymicrosoftoffice.com/buyemea2.

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

Umm... I just tried "Buy a single language pack now", but I get a page titled "Trial Conversion" that isn't actually helpful.

Thursday, April 05, 2007 11:32 AM by nlgblog

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

Hi Marc,

The term "trial conversion" is actually a relic from the store that has been open for a few weeks that allows users to convert a trial version to a live version of Office 2007, and to purchase a language pack at the same time. You can ignore this and go on with the procedure described on that page.

I hope it helps,

Thierry

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

Hi Thierry,

What instructions are you referring to? I am trying it as well as it simply says "Product not found." and there is no further way to go.

I am trying to get from a German office to an English one. Also, I have Vista Home Premium in German (pre-installed on my new laptop). Changing that to English proves to be very difficult. Do I have to upgrade to Ultimate?!

Any advice highly appreciated.

Best,

Mark

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

Hi Mark,

No English Language Pack is offered, except as part of the Multi-Language Pack (MLP) (if you are  looking for the English proofing tools, they are already provided by default with your German version of Office).

All of the above applies to Office 2007, not to the operating system.

There have been some issues reported with the link to the online store where you can purchase language packs. The "not found" error indicates that this problem has not yet been resolved yet. Its been escalated and its being worked on. Please keep trying, it should be fixed soon.

I bought a German version of Office 2007 after reading about the single language packs, being under the impression that I could switch to an English UI later. Are you telling me that this is not possible without buying the MLP that includes tons of languages that I don't need?

Hi,

on the site with the "not found" error do a search for "language packs". You will receive all available language packs for office 2007.

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

Wait a minute.

I actually managed to download the installation file and pay for it.

But after activating it, it simply will not run.

So far I did not manage to install Italian proofing tools, in spite of purchasing the relevant language pack, not to mention changing the user interface.

The installation seems to abort as soon as it starts without any further message.

Anybody has any suggestion?

All this has been really disappointing.

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

Hi Renato,

There is no activation for Office Language Packs. Is the activation you mention related to an Office suite? Did you upgrade an Office trial version and purchase a language pack in the same transaction? Feel free to email us a screenshot of your experience and we'll try to diagnose.

Thanks,

Thierry

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

Hi Thierry.

An activation was requested the first time I run the EXE file after downloading it (though I never had an Office trial version). However, all it does is apparently to create a temporary directory in which it copies itself and a couple of other files (including a DDL). After that, I can quickly see a dialog box stating, in Italian, that files are being extracted, then nothing more. No error messages or anything of the kind, so that I really have no screenshot to show.

Thanks very much for your help.

Renato,

Change the file and folder settings to show hidden files.

Go to C:\Users\YOUR_NAME\AppData\Local\Temp\OfficeLP-DU (DU stands for Dutch, so it will be different for your language) and launch the application that's located in this folder.

Good luck,

Thank you, Koen.

I already tried (in my case the path being of course ...\Temp\OfficeLP-IT), but it did not work. Everything appears to go in the same way as before. I understand the method you proposed has worked for you however, and I am still open to suggestions.

Thanks anyhow.

When will the English Language Pack come out?

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

A single language pack for English will not be offered; only as part of the Office Multi-Language Pack 2007 (due out in July; Suggest Retail Price $199).  Without the MLP, you should purchase English versions of Office suites or apps, and then add individual Language Packs.

I bought Office 2007 (Home Version) in German so my other family members could use it.

So you are telling me that I should either

A) spend 199$ for the MLP so I can switch the UI language to English

or

B) buy a new English version plus a German language pack?

What is the problem with offering an English language pack?

Hi!

I have a Norwegian version of Office 2007 and now have downloaded the Russian Single Language Pack, but when I start the installation the characters displayed are not possible to read. The interface to the installation program seems to be in Russian and the characters are not displayed correctly. I have activated Russian language in Windows XP and even included Russian for non-UNICODE programs, but still the characters displayed are just rubbish. How can I fix this?

RENATO:

You are a god send!  Thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to write your solution to the single language pack installation problem after you finally got things resolved.

I have had big problems downloading the appropriate german language pack through Digital River.  Then they've been unresponsive to my e-mail requests.  Then after downloading the correct german language pack it never really installed.  Copying files in C:\Users\...\Temp\OfficeLP-GE to the Desktop and running the *.exe from there ended my frustration and the installation was seamless.

Thierry, I urge you to take notice and find out what's going on here.  Good luck, all.

I'm installing the Japanese files.  I was able to buy it, download, and launch the executable, but when I entered the license key into the executable, I just got a server error.

I checked the license key several times and tried both the bottom and middle parts of the digital river verify panel, both with and without hyphens in the key.

I used an American credit card, but downloaded to a machine located in Japan.

I've tried this on both a WinVista and WinXP machine.

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

For those that have problems with the activation of the license key received from Digital River, the issue could arise from being within a corporate network. The following options are available:

1)  attempt activation from another location (e.g. from a location that is not behind the corporate firewall)

2)  contact customer service and the C/S rep will walk you through a manual activation over the telephone. Contact information is included on the activation dialog box.

Hope this helps in resolving this issue.

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

If you experience issues with installing the product, please move the contents from

C:\Users\YOUR_NAME\AppData\Local\Temp\OfficeLP*

to a new folder somewhere on your machine, preferably on the root of c:\.  For example, a user named PSmith who ordered the Italian language product would do the following:

1) Browse to c:\Users\PSmith\AppData\Local\Temp\OfficeLP-IT\

2) Copy the three files in this folder.

3) Create a new folder on c:\ called "temp"

4) Browse to c:\temp\

5) Paste three files from c:\Users\PSmith\AppData\Local\Temp\OfficeLP-IT\ to c:\temp\.

6) Double-click the EXE package.

7) Witness product installing correctly.

Thank you,

Thorsten,

Thanks for your advice.  Replies:

1.  I can attempt at another location, but actually I'm using at home where there is no firewall.  I tried turning-off my PC's firewalls (Windows Live OneCare and Windows Firewall) but it didn't seem to make much of a difference.  I'll try again.

2.  The activation dialog box for the Japanese SLP doesn't have Digital River's contact info on it (if you need proof I can provide a screen shot [not exactly sure how to do that on this blog, in any event its all in Japanese but plainly there is no phone number or e-mail address]).  If you can provide some DR contact info on this blog its much appreciated.

Tim:

If you have only an Office suite installed, select Option 1. If you have a suite plus Project or Visio installed, select Option 1 first and then run the LP install again and select Option 2 or 3.

Both Project and Visio have separate LP installs, since additional components (i.e. Visio shapes, etc.) are installed that are not part of an Office suite.

Hi,

I was really looking forward to the SLPs. I followed the alternative link (http://buy.trymicrosoftoffice.com/buyus/connect.aspx?app=langpack&cmd=office_product) to use a non-US billing address. The price now is given in Euro. However, while the price in US$ is $24,95 the price in Euro is €29,10. Why is this? $24,95 are only about €18,45. Why do I have to pay ~55% more?

Can we expect a fairer price when the Office Online pages are localized?

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

Thorten/Brent,'

I followed Brent's workaround precisely, however I got the same "server error - wrong/invalid serial[additional text cut off]"

The other thing I noticed was that the link Andre of Germany mentioned leads to a picklist of countries.  This list seems to iclude all of the world's countries EXCEPT JAPAN.

So my theory is that while I was able to buy the Japanese SLP using my USA credit card, the download includes the Digital River Japanese license key authorization screen and that screen figures out that I'm in Japan (by my IP address) and thus communicates with some Japan market part of Digital River, but this part has not yet been set-up to facilitate SLP sales.  Hence I can't use the SLP.

Can you guys investigate this idea?  It would explain why Japan is not listed in the picklist.

This page gives you all you need to get the Language pack. Wonder why the download is so slow!!!

Going at 11.4 kb/s on ADSL while from the Microsoft downloads was going at 75 kb/s!!!

Do you have several FTP servers which are chosen depending on the country you are downloading from or just one?

# April 30 - German SLP install went well

I downloaded the SLP last night from the 'Customers who are not in the US' URL above. The first time around I got the Brazilian Portuguese pack. I'm sure I selected the German. I asked for a refund (and it will be interesting to see if I get it). The next time around I got the German pack. Clicking on the .exe *seemed* not to work - although I noted a great deal of drive activity.

The install window finally came up, and I entered the activation code. I believe I clicked on the first button on the screen.

The install went well, and now I can do a spell check in a document without difficulty. An added plus: a parallel English-German document can be checked without having to highlight a portion of the document and specify the language (as you must in Proofing Tools 2003).

Annoyance #1: The install instructions are all in the language of install (i.e., Portuguese or German). It would be nice to have an option. Students with little understanding of a language will have problems.

Annoyance #2: There is nothing on the order confirmation screen or in the name of the download to state what language you are downloading. If that had been available, I wouldn't have spent over an hour downloading the wrong language.

Added Note: I ended up with the folder - C:\OfficeLP-German. I deleted it, and everything still works well. It did contain a copy of the executable; so if you do not back up your downloads elsewhere, leave the folder on your hard drive.

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

I just purchased the German language pack a couple of days ago, and the spell check function is not working. I have played around with the settings to make sure that it is marked as enabled, and I have even run the "repair" function on it from the add/remove programs screen, and still nothing. The grammar check seems to be at least partially functional, but blatant spellings errors are going undetected. Any suggestions?

I've asked Brent to look into the LP installation issues and to respond here.

In regards to the download speeds, the files are served via distributed download servers. It might have been an issue with network congestion in that particular region, but we'll make sure to monitor this.

The stating of the product language on the confirmation page is being addressed in an upcoming release of the online stores.

Are we talking about Microsoft? Is it so difficult to correct a simple link to the correct file download? Who can I address to have a solution and not more headaches? I have 35 users waiting for the Portuguese dictionary and Microsoft can’t provide me a single one. Is this quality of service?

I’ve been refunded by the licenses I’ve bought except for a “Lock Box da licença – com Chave de Licença e CD de Segurança” (that I’m expecting to receive by mail). Now that I have the Pack and know that it works like it should be, we’re going to buy the 35 licenses we need. I’ve TRIED to order 1 LP Italian and 2 LP German… What a frustrating experience!

I have placed the order 7 times and never got a confirmation of order accepted, or credit card not accepted, or confirmation by email, or whatever ANY stupid web shop does!

The technical support says that all the order have been cancelled but I still can see them in my order list...

So I have placed the order and selected ”wire transfer” as payment, it worked, yeah, finally!

I have placed the payment and after 4 days I’ve got the confirmation email with the 3 activation codes and the download link.

Oh my God! Finally!

Talked too soon!

I have downloaded the software installed and… surprise! The LP is Portuguese!

So asked by email to send a new download link to the LPs I have ordered… not possible, I have to ask for a refund that maybe I will bet in 2/3 weeks…

Microsoft/Digital River this is RIDICULUS!

Now after one month I'm still here struggling with this useless web shop which doesn't even say what language you have ordered, or just send a simple email to say that your order has not been accepted.

Don’t know what to do anymore…

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

I am working in Germany and installed a German version of Office 2007. I then installed an english language pack. But some of the functions are still in German! For example, when I try to apply a multi level list to get numbered headings i.e.

1 Heading 1

1.1 Heading 2

1.1.1 Heading 3

this option uses the german word for heading

1 Überschrift 1 etc

not the english one, but the shortcut buttons in Styles are in English and refuse to become numbered headings.

Does anyone have a solution for this??

Dear TG

Would it be possible for you to provide the order numbers (these start with "CNL") and a valid email address so we may contact you to get this resolved directly? We are eager to assist.

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

Thanks for your help. Today I have ordered with a different account and credit card and it worked. The problem is that I had to use my personal credit card not the company credit card.

The main problem in the web shop is the lack of feedback in case the order is not accepted. Just a message that says "sorry your card has not been accepted because... do you want to try with a different credit card?"

Easy...

Also, in the order history, why don't you report the order status?

BRW to contact me please use this email address trucchetto [at] gmail [dot] com

Thanks

DR looney tunes continues. Unable to order any language packs in the US. I go through the entire order process and finish with a message to the effect that payment didn't go through. Tried on IE7 and Firefox 2, tried with 3 different credit cards. I get an order number but cannot use that to contact DR Customer Support as I'm told the order number they just gave me is invalid (e.g. CNL21351159).

What gives?

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

Hi there. I am also one of the potentially millions of people around the world screwed by MS regarding the English language pack.

I have a German version of office 2007, and only to find that there will not be any English LP unless I wish to spend another $200 instead of $24.

This is simply mad. There must be so many people out there who would wish or need to buy the English language pack to add to their office product.

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

@digital river, please fix your language pack order page.

1. Go to http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/suites/FX102113661033.aspx

2. Click on "Buy a single language pack now"

3. Select any version but "Brazilian", click "Buy Now" (strange sorting in the dropdown btw)

4. On your shopping cart page select Country "Other"

5. On the Choose a Region/Country page select any Country

6. On the Product Selection page click on the "Buy Now" button next to Microsoft Office Language Pack 2007 (not on the title)

7. There's no version select, you'll end up with the first product in the list which is "Brazilian"; however at no time the product version is mentioned during checkout; it will only be mentioned in the email confirmation.

Please correct the "Buy Now" link on the Product Selection page http://buy.trymicrosoftoffice.com/buyemea1/default.aspx, it's an easy fix. And please include the actual version you're ordering on the confirmation page, not just the term "Microsoft Office Language Pack 2007"

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

I have experienced the exact download error (resulted in three Brazilian Portuguese LP's instead of three German) that Tass so well has described above. I have contacted Digital River with order number etc but no response >48 hours - not what they promised! I would really appreciate an initiative to fix this from their side since the problem has been known for over a month, not to mention I would like to have a correct download link to the German LP... So far around 100 Euros down the drain.

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

I am not interested in computers, software or acrobatic downloads. I need to work produce text) in several languages. This was possible in 2003.

I had nothing but expense and time lows with 2007.

Perhaps it is a respomsibility of Microsoft to deliver a product that one has paid for.

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

Language Packs are not required in order to "produce text in other languages." Most keyboard configurations can be changed from within Windows, and IMEs (Input Method Editors) for more complex languages can be downloaded for free from MS.COM download center.  There is no expense associated with any of these.

If you want additional editing languages, you can acquire individual language pack or the Multi-Language Pack. These have a cost associated with them, as did Proofing Tools in 2003. Language Packs also enable you to change the UI and help languages. These are only around $25 each, or $199 for the MLP (which contains 37 languages). These were not previously unavailable to consumers in 2003.

So, to reiterate, you get the same base functionality in 2007 as you did in 2003 without any additional cost, and you now have new choices to enhance your multilingual Office experience at a very minimal cost.

Here's how you enable text in another language - for free!  http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/HA100245231033.aspx

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

I have also been a victim of the "Brazilian pack".

For example, emea2 site works correctly and asks you for the language you want.

I had to order at the emea1 site, which DOES NOT ask you for the language pack.

It just sends you a Brazilian pack and there you have it.

I wanted to order a SLOVENIAN Pack, got the Brazilian instead!

Please advise, what to do.

Sincerely,

Ambroz

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

At present, you need to click on the Office Language Pack logo, so that you get taken to the language selection page, and once you have used the pull-down list to select your language, then add it to your cart using the Buy Now button.

The best way to ensure that you get what you want is to empty your shopping basket, then click the 'return to trial conversions' page, then click the language pack logo, select your desired language, then click Buy Now and check out.

This is not optimal, I agree, and this is in the process of being corrected. But for the time being, the above steps should get you what you need.

This is getting a little aggravating... I got a Dutch-language Office 2007 for my family, and now I can't work with my menu's in English without spending $200? That seems a little crazy - I was under the impression that English as a display language shipped with all Office versions.

# German SIP and dialects e.g. Swiss German

Anybody knows if the German Single Language Pack for Office 2007 also includes the German dialects e.g. Swiss German and Austrian German?

Couldn't find out on the MS-Page.

Any help would be appreciated!

TIA

Hi Patrick,

The German proofing tools support Swiss German, indeed (there are differences in the speller lexicon). No distinction is made between standard German and Austrian German.

I hope it helps,

I have the Greek version of Office 2007 and I want to change my Office interface to english. How can I do that? I can't see any available english lip at any of the sites linked at the top.

In addition if such a pack is available is it suitable for all versions of Office? (I am using Office Small Business 2007 at work and Office Home and Student 2007 at home).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

Hi Stelios,

See the answer provided on this blog by my colleague Adam on 11 April:

A single language pack for English will not be offered; only as part of the Office Multi-Language Pack 2007 (due out in July; Suggest Retail Price $199).  Without the MLP, you should purchase English versions of Office suites or apps, and then add individual Language Packs.

The Multi-Language Pack has been delayed (we'll keep you posted when it's available).

Best wishes,

Thierry

# Mr.

Hi ,I purchased the Hebrew Single Language Pack for Office 2007 from the Digital River site. I activated it and everything was fine.

Then my pc recently crashed and the motherboard had to be replaced. This required formatting my harddisk and re-installing windows and all my software. For some reason, I can't now activate the product that I purchased. I enter the activation key in the Digital River window provided, the program tries to connect to a server and then times out with "Unknown error". Not even an error number.

I have tried writng to the Digital river support but they don't seem to be of any help and keep on refering me to the Microsoft Support Site. There is no support for this type of error.

If it helps, here are my order details and support number:

# Activation product at install

Hello,

We have purchased the French LIP. When I doubleclick the executable the software gets unpacked to c:\OfficeLP-French and the setup starts.

However I need to activate the product before I can continue the installation and this does not work. I recieve an unknown error during validation. What can I do to fix this issue ? Is there a log file or can I find a number for Belgium that I can can call to perform the Manual activation procedure ? This number is nowhere to be found. I also contacted MS and they are investigating the problem, awaiting info.

Could you provide the number or procedure to follow ?

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

Dear all,

I have been having the same problem and have been in contact with Microsoft. There seems to be very little support from Microsoft on Language Packs and no one there really seems to know much about them.

I think (in my own opinion) that the problem is that the license number can only be registered once (due to lack of support from Microsoft). Hence to put it on another computer you will have to phone up MS or Digital River (?) to get them to unregister the product key on their server, and then you should be able to reinstall it.

As I say, I haven't completed this yet, so may not work, but I'm planning to try it out.

Best wishes.

M.

Have you tried using the Windows Live Translation service referred to here: http://blogs.msdn.com/naturallanguage/archive/2007/09/13/windows-live-translator-microsoft-s-new-machine-translation-web-service.aspx

(assuming you are looking for a machine translation system to assist you, if I understand your question correctly)

Hi.. I'm from Malaysia and i would like to buy  Japanese SLP for my Office 2007 Small Business Suites. I've been calling Microsoft Malaysia and their respective distributors regarding this matter. Unfortunately none can supply this SLP.

My question are,

1) Can i get it online via http://buy.trymicrosoftoffice.com/buyus/connect.aspx?app=langpack&cmd=office_product.

2) How it will be send? Is it via download page or  via shipping?

Hi Faizul,

The Japanese Language Pack can indeed be bought from Office Online. From the link given above, after clicking on the "Buy Now" button, you'll have to choose the country in which you are located. You'll then be able to pay with your credit card and you'll receive the instructions to download the product.

I hope it helps,

Best wishes,

Thierry

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

I have just purchased the Swedish single language pack and my credit card was charged immediately. HOWEVER, there was NO download link, and NO activation key on the invoice. Furthermore the promised e-mail that was to be sent out has still not arrived. There are no contact details (fax or telephone numbers) to Customer Service and I need to have this sorted out immediately. The mail-in form claims that responses will be received within 1 business day. It is 13:45 here in Sweden. It is a Friday and a very important business day in this country. I cannot afford to wait until Monday: I needed the programme today, which is why I opted to download the single programme, instead of waiting to purchase the multi-language pack that I would have preferred.

I feel like I have been robbed.

Can anyone assist???

Thank you.

# re: Single Language Packs available for Office 2007 users

I tried to purchase the German single language pack through Digital River, however, it is not possible to choose Mastercard as a payment method as the software automatically resets to Visa; I would have expected that Office Ultimate contains all major languages (the name is the clue), but the clumsy sales process (registration with Live ID, fiddling with the countries, not acccepting credit cards) is in a league of its own.

Instead of getting the English install file from the 'Download Now' button, i got the BULGARIAN install from the Digital River server.  I guess link testing on a ecommerce site isn't so important to these guys.  Their support response was a useless 'we have received your request for refund' with absolutely no explanation for the fault or how I can actually get the product I ordered.  So I guess it's available but unreachable.
