Development on the SharePoint Platform
SPUM2003 X1.1 - (V1.0 will be SPUser.EXE)

Made some progress on SPUM2003 and I have now decided to release version X1.1 for you guys to look at.

Please be aware of the following:

Whats in over version X1.0

  • Ability to add users to a WSS site
  • Ability to delete users from a WSS site
  • Ability to edit users on a WSS site
  • Double-click on a node in the treeview will open the site in a new browser
  • Some error handling gone in
  • Should display some information on user alerts
  • Render out all site roles, including custom ones
  • Got some icons in the treeview to refelct what the site type is

Stuff that hasn't yet made it:

  • SPS Object Model.  Still working on giving the ability to perform user management on SPS Areas. (Version X1.2)
  • Cross site groups are not yet showing up.  Not absolutely sure why yet as I have dropped the code in but it never seems to be able to find them!

Stuff that is odd:

  • If you delete a user from a site and then re-add that user, with different details such as user name, notes, etc, then the previous information is restored.  Do not know why yet so the process to add a "new" user who has been on the site before is to add them account and give them a role and then select and edit them.

If you find any bugs with user management in WSS, then please leave information on how to reproduce as feedback to this post please!  Also, any suggestions on how you would like to see the interface changed to make it more intuitive.

Keep up the good work said:

In poking around the SP tables, it appears that if you delete users from sharepoint, it stores the data in a DeletedUsers table. I am not sure how that ties in to what you are experiencing, but if you then delete them from that table, they will be gone....don't know if it breaks anything, though....

There are some problems wuith the alerts list
it seems as it is not cleared properly between users!!??

IMHO
The user container needs to be bigger (it is after all an user manager :-))
and it needs to be at least sortable by clicking the header
and a find tool would be nice - or that it jumps to the user on start typing

It could also be nice to be able to select more than one user at the time

merry Xmas

Enough with the name :-)

I am happy to rename but I cannot really think of anything too clever for it.

The next version (V1.0) will be called SPUser.EXE

If you don't like that, leave me a more sensible idea!

Is this tool only supposed to be used on the server? When trying to access anything other than localhost it tells us that something can't be found. Is their more documentation about how this tool works and what it works on from a client/server perspective.

Thanks in advance.

James.

Yes, the tool is only for the server as it uses the WSS OM and that is not remoteable.
