Baby you can drive my car ...

Just how big is Microsoft these days?  Well last I heard we have ~75K employees, not counting vendors and temporary staff.  We are building and buying everything we can in the Redmond area.  We've had to valet park in a number of buildings for ages.  Now comes the mammoth parking garage!  We are building a centrally located garage that will hold more than 5,000 automobiles!  Wow.  What does that say about our growth, not to mention we just can't seem to get people to use public transit (enough of my opinions though about useless public $$ wasted on bus lines, carpool lanes, etc.)?  What does a 5,000 vehicle garage look like?  6 city blocks and 4 stories deep!

I've also heard it rumored that our Microsoft campus shuttle service is the largest privately run service of its kind in the US.  These are the Microsoft vans that employees are encouraged to use when going between buildings.  Unfortunately, the vans take 30 minutes to get anywhere (due to multiple stops) so everyone drives rather than jump in the shuttle.  Rarely can you walk because it is too far, and being the Northwest it just might be raining!

Next time you are on campus be sure to visit our parking structure and ride the shuttle.  Definitely part of the Microsoft experience.  smile_wink

Umm...30 minutes to get anywhere...hmm...not sure about that one!

Just back from the company store (to building 16), took about 5 minutes to get there (bit of a delay getting back due to the idiotic phone system...not sure why we can't automate that!). Not just vans, most of the shuttles are priuses (hmm...what is the plural of prius, should be prii?)

You got me Scott ... 30 min is the extreme but seriously I plan 30 min for travel.  Today I have my car in for service so I have to take the Shuttle.  I'm in 18 and going to 42.   I could walk fastest but I have high heels on today :-)I have to allow 30 min for multiple stops since i'm on that kind of route (vs when you call and get one just for you).  I can't be late for meetings b/c it isn't in my nature.  Thanks for the reality check and support of the shuttle!

Not complete support, things can and do slow down drastically.

I've found that I can't really *depend* on a shuttle to get to important meetings and stuff...have waited 20 minutes just for a Prius to arrive before and wound up squeezing in the back with 2 other people (I am NOT a small person!). Shuttles are useful but they are variable and seem to be getting worse with time..but my real pain point is the phone system, in the past I have literally called a cab after waiting so long on hold that the system just cut me off...

As a visitor, I've also been unimpressed with the shuttle. It's simply too uncertain on time. If the weather is nice, I can usually walk in the time it takes to wait on a shuttle and then ride over.

Actually, I would think the ideal transport for the campus would be a bike. As long as you had one that was OK to get wet and had a basket to carry things, the way people in Amsterdam and Key West do.

Billy - the latest we've seen is the Segway's.  I have to admit they still look pretty silly around campus but a good idea right along w/bikes.  I have always thought the bikes would be a great inexpensive way to get us around and get us off our butts!

I'm with Billy on this one....

It drives me battywatching the MSFT traffic jams when I'm on campus... The fact that you're building a 5000 car garage is testament to the fact that MS has failed miserably in finding a workable commuting solution.

Frankly ideal for me around campus would be a bike and/or a little alluminium push scooter and my Toughbook Tablet PC slung over my shoulder....

I like your ideas Chris ... the US overall just really sucks (except in a few major cities) when it comes to mass transit.  Look forward to continuing traffic messes on campus.  However we are encouraging more remote working.  That's the only solution that will keep me from driving alone to campus each day.

Usually a garage ends up costing between $4500 and $15000 per space. Did anyone offer incentives ($$$) for people to take mass transit or bike? Seems Google is being very environmentally friendly, but MSFT keeps on trucking old school style.

BN - Microsoft does indeed offer us incentives - free bus pass, carpool pass for special parking, ride share (sponsored by county I think), etc.  I don't think any are enough to get most Microsofties out of their cars.
