Now the EU is after .NET ... what's next?

kitterton goes to SJ I don't know why but I thought we were wrapping up all the European Union (EU) disputes, but now they are opening new inquiries.  According to today's New York Times, the current complaints are focused on interoperability issues ... The NYT doesn't mention .NET but the Financial Times does saying the inquiry states "Microsoft is using its ".Net" technology - under development since the start of this decade - to create the tight linkages in the software used to write applications that run over the Internet".  It is hard to know what exactly we are doing wrong here, but as you can imagine a number of competitors are the ones pushing the inquiries, claiming again they have been edged out.  Sigh ...

I'm not surpised, disappointed, but not surpised!!!

Basically the European's don't like the US, Big Business, or by the looks of it Microsoft.

As a software developer who used to write C++ code for UNIX and now can enjoy life because I code in C# on the .NET platform ... thank you Microsoft!!!

The NY Times article is here: http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/technology/AP-EU-Microsoft.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=microsoft+EU&oref=slogin

The issues are bigger than just .NET, they are rehashing the Netscape vs. IE discussion as well. That said, I would love to see what "interoperability information" we refused to give out. All the bits of .NET are more-or-less open standards. Hell, there's the MONO project (http://www.mono-project.com/Main_Page) that creates a CLR for Linux and allows execution of binaries compiled in VS using the Microsoft stack.

I think the bureaucrats of the European Union like to smash the "US-Capitalism" - and Microsoft is the ideal candidate, because MS is unpopular in some views.

This is crazy.

It seems like we should be able to get a ground swell of community support that would convince the EU how crazy it is.  However I don't think that type of effort works as well in Europe.  Thaks for your support!
