The Open XML community supports Ecma International's decision to submit Open XML to the International Standards Organization (ISO/IEC) and believes this will bring additional choice and innovation to the marketplace. If you want to know a bit more about Open XML read the information below (which comes straight from the Open XML community site) for an overview. For more in-depth information have a look at the "Learn More" page which contains links to information on the purpose and benefits of Ecma Open XML, why it is important to Governments and why there is a need for multiple document standards.

About Open XML

Ecma Office Open XML ("Open XML") is an international, open standard for word-processing documents, presentations, and spreadsheets that can be freely implemented by multiple applications on multiple platforms. Microsoft Office (2007, 2003, XP, 2000), OpenOffice Novell Edition, open-source project Gnumeric, Neo-Office 2.1 and PalmOS (Dataviz) already support Open XML. Corel has announced Open XML support for WordPerfect 2007 and developers worldwide are building solutions using OpenXML.
The work to standardize Open XML was carried out by Ecma International via its Technical Committee 45 (TC45), which includes representatives from Apple, Barclays Capital, BP, The British Library, Essilor, Intel, Microsoft, NextPage, Novell, Statoil, Toshiba, and the United States Library of Congress. It was designed to provide unique benefits not offered by existing ISO standards, including the ability to enable high fidelity migration from existing binary formats to XML based formats.
There is already a long list of community members which you can see here. Why not add your name to the list!
