I've seen this demonstrated on TV, only with cheese instead of marshamllows. I can't help thinking that it's cheating to rely on the microwave specifications though.

Well, yes, but at least the experiment demonstrates that the speed of electromagnetic waves, the speed of light (which is electromagnetic waves), the wavelength and the frequency are all linked together.
I like those unconventional ways to make science more interesting.
I remember watching the Australian-originated "Curiosity Show" when I was a child.
