PDF SpeedUp

I have previously written about how darn slow Adobe Acrobat 6 is when launching. I don't understand why Acrobat is so darn annoying. Here are some things I don't care for:

  • Don't create a “My eBooks“ folder in My Documents when I have nothing to put there.
  • Don't load 500 plugins when none of them are necessary to view a PDF
  • Don't place shortcuts for some lame Internet Printing thingy in my Start Menu (I loathe Start Menu Advertising)
  • Do install a PDF IFilter so that indexing products like Lookout can index PDFs w/o installing it seperatley
  • Don't load PDFs in IE because it is god awful slow
  • Don't make copy and paste so freaking hard
  • Don't ask me to install other Adobe software when I boot Acrobat
  • Don't create an updater (6.0.2) that creates an additional entry in my add/remove programs
If you want to fix most of these things, PDF SpeedUp is a free application that should come bundled with Acrobat. It's a must have piece of software to make Acrobat behave (as much as you can anyway).

I haven't seen any features I think I need at the moment in Acrobat Reader 6 so I just hop over to http://www.oldversion.com/ and grab version 4 or 5, back when they weren't so bloated.

Probably the root of all that "issues" is that adobe came from Mac originally (if I'm correct?!?), and are not native Windows. Especially that copy-and-paste issues could resolve from this...

while we are at it can anyone give me a way to just print a PDF file from .net?

current workaround is to run a shell to dos
problem with this is acrobat will not just print and exit. it stays resident.

other options are: a VB6 app using the active X bits, a mess.
or pay for the acrobat sdk...
contacting them for support is a waste.
they will not help -- do not even want to think about it unless you buy the SDK and membership.

I have found many com and .net packages that will create a pdf file... none that just view and print.

I wouldn't worry. Microsoft is going to be replacing PDF with XAML .container files soon enough.

Like most other techies, whenever I install Adobe’s Acrobat Reader I also uninstall most of the pointless
