NSW Health computer services unit HealthTechnology will install internet telephones throughout its network of urban and regional offices as it chases capital and labour savings.

The business unit, which sits underneath the NSW Department of Health's corporate arm, the Health Administration Corporation, awarded a contract for the project to communications integrator NSC Enterprise Solutions.

Under the deal NSC will supply and manage a voice over IP system that will operate across HealthTechnology's five offices. The IP telephony platform will use technology from Avaya.

NSC will provide project management, implementation and ongoing support for the IP system while HealthTechnology will provide and maintain the data network that the new phone system will operate over.

"The new solution not only provides HealthTechnology with a strong platform for growth, but also gives us the capacity to make excess capacity available to other government departments," HealthTechnology chief information officer Denis Nosworthy said in a statement.

HealthTechnology is consolidating information systems used by hospitals across NSW following the recent amalgamation of the state's area health services.
