Getting help with the Office Outlook Connector

As many of you know, the Microsoft Office Outlook Connector for Windows Live Hotmail recently exited beta. This blog has seen a lot of traffic and has received many comments about the connector since it first arrived. It is great to see such enthusiasm! Since the community was so active during the beta period, we were able to track down and fix more issues and ultimately release a better product.

Since the connector shipped, we’ve gotten a lot more great feedback and questions. Answers to lots of the common questions, including installation, basic functionality, and issues related to upgrading from the beta, are below.

The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document has some great information in it for beta testers and for customers who have upgraded from the beta, so please take a look. The FAQ can be found on the Microsoft Download Center along with the installation files for the latest release. The FAQ is only available in English and is available in Word 97-2003 and Word 2007 formats.

Take a look!

This still doesn't answer the most important question I have had.  Why do Hotmail Plus accounts not qualify for Calendar sync?  We are paying customers and that seems to be a "Premium" account in my eyes.

I'm now using Outlook Connector version 12.0.4518.1063 that was released today (09/11/2007) along with Outlook 2007. I was having trouble today getting the sync to complete, so I upgraded to the new version.

I have a Hotmail Plus account and I noticed that as of today I now have 10 GB of space available. But in the Outlook Connector it reports that I have 5GB of space.  Could it be that the descripency has something to do with the problem?

My wife has a free hotmail account that only has 5 GB of space and her sync is working just fine.

Opps, that was wrong. Actually, the problem is not with my Hotmail account at all. It's will my Office Live Mail account on my own domain. And I just checked and that account only has the 5GB size, so I guess that has nothing to do with it.

just installed the final Outlook Connector on my desktop winxp sp2 and laptop vista ultimate, both of which have outlook 2007/office 2007 professional.  I have multiple email accounts and am an office live essentials subscriber.  since the update to the new connector, my outlook CONSTANTLY crashes even though I have disabled all add-ins and every time outlook starts on both machines I am prompted over and over again to check the automatic sign in block for each email account.  All of my email accounts have low space usage as I frequently archive the messages (the ones I don't delete) in a PST mailbox on my desktop. HELP! I am an advanced user of my outlook and my business is dependent upon my being able to use this valuable tool.  Whatever is going on is really crippling.

I support Eagle117 - the Calendar feature in Live Hotmail is completely useless as long as you can't sync it somewhere. And with the definition of "premium account" in Outlook Connector you just can't use it in Europe even if you are willing to pay - as there is (afaik) only Hotmail Plus which doesn't work. Is there any strategy behind that?

I installed Microsoft Office Outlook Connector few hours ago. Till now i'm unable to get it to work. I've set up my accounts and everything. Restarted Outlook 2003 also.

But the error im getting is as above title. Is it because im behind a proxy server? Doesnt Microsoft Office Outlook Connector uses HTTP, which uses port 80? Im blocked from accessing hotmail.com & mail.live.com by my proxy server

The connector was working fine for me up until today. However, now it is not updating any of my accounts with new messages. When I logged into Hotmail this morning I had 5 new messages. As of yet, these haven't appeared in Outlook. I can send emails, but not receiving any. When I do a manual "Send/Receive" it does a long "Send/Receive" processing of all my accounts, but doesn't pull any new messages from the server.

I have tried reinstalling the Outlook Connector, but this hasn't fixed anything.

I'm using Outlook 2007 and version 12.0.4518.1063 of Outlook Connector.

I am having the identical problem as Zoom7000.  The only response the help desk people seem to know is to 'reinstall' Outlook Connector (Which doesn't work BTW).  I am getting 2 different error messages.  Most of the time I get error #4104.  Occasionally I also get error # 4350 as well.

I don't know what the error messages mean, but not having the Connector work is incredibly annoying especially as I have paid for this and the Help Desk / Support people are absolutely worthless.

I forgot to say that I am using Outlook 2003 (I never did receive my 'free' upgrade to Outlook 2007.  The Connector version is: 12.0.4518.1063.  All other previous versions (including the last beta) worked just fine -- no issues what so ever.

I have also noticed that with this version it doesn't seem to check for new messages unless you do a manual check, even then only the non-Microsoft accounts will download -- I haven't had a Hotmail/Live message come in to Outlook for a couple of weeks or so now...

Hi Jared,

I have the same experience as Zoom7000.  Today around noon EST, it stopped working for me.  I am a Premium Subscriber and have been using it to synchronize my calendar and mail.  Outlook later in the day told me that 1063 was available and I updated.  Still no luck, it says "Could not sign in" on the Button Bar, and the detailed report reads "Error in Mail -Network operation failed".  I suddenly realize how dependent I am on OLC.  Please let us know if there has been a change and when/how we can resolve the issue.  If additional information would be helpful, please let me know.

Thank you

Jared,

Outlook 2007 informed me yesterday that I needed to update Outlook Connector in order to keep using it.  The about OC windows shows it upgraded to version 12.0.4518.1063.  My Hotmail account seems to still work fine but my Office Live Mail Basic account cannot connect.  I've tried removing the OLMB account and adding it again but a window pops up saying the OC is now only for subscribers - do you want to subscribe.  Is this just a temporary setback or is OC no longer supporting OLMB accounts?  Like some of the others here, I have come to rely on OC and Office to track issues and flag messages (and other features like read receipt requests).

Using the Outlook Connector, I can't seem to send anything out through my Hotmail account while I'm connected to my workplace network, but it seems to work fine at home, so I suspect it's a proxy server issue. Is there any way to configure the Outlook Connector for a proxy server?

OK, clearly there is a problem.

As with others I was forced to upgrade, if I don't upgrade I can't get my email.

So I upgraded, and so now I still can't get my email.

I had version 12.0.4518.1058, this version worked perfectly well for me. No problems.

I was forced to upgrade to 12.0.4518.1063, which now doesn't work.

If I allow the connector to upgrade itself, I get the following error:

Error in Mail

Network operation failed

So I rolled my system back (using system restore).

I then manually updated and received the exact same error.

So I rolled my system back again.

I then manually removed my email account from Outlook (after Archiving my every email associated with this account) and de-installed the Outlook Connector. I then installed the latest version (12.0.4518.1063) and received the same error AND:

Error in Mail

Outlook Connector is available only to subscribers.

So, I rolled my system back again, but still can't access my email through the connector because it is forcing me to upgrade to something that doesn't work.

I'm using Outlook 2007 with OfficeLive basics. Again, it worked yesterday morning without issue prior to the upgrade!

...my wife and daughter's machines have just been "upgraded" to 12.0.4518.1063 too.  Now none of us are able to use Outlook :-(

What gives?  We moved the family's email into the cloud and specifically selected live.com because we could continue to use Outlook via the Outlook connector.  But it's no good if it just doesn't work.

We're in the UK and all using en-GB versions of Vista/O2k7 in case that's relevant.

Clearly a number of people are having this problem - any chance of an update on the situation from you guys?

Thanks,

Outlook 2007 recently prompted me to update Outlook Connector (OC) when it started.  After following the upgrade prompts my Windows Live Hotmail account (Custom Domains and Windows Live Hotmail Plus account, actually) quit syncing and a message popped up saying that the network operation failed.  When I removed this account from Outlook and re-created it using OC, I get a message that OC is available only to subscribers.  But I am a subscriber.

It was working fine until the latest 12.0.4518.1063 version.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

I Outlook 07 working nicely with the mail downloads from officelive.. but now that functionality is broken. Is that

(a) because Microsoft decided to pull a free feature to a "paid feature"

or

(b) because there are technical glitches on the back end services if the client upgrade..

or

(c) some problem with my setup.

All answers are good answers.. I just dont want to waste my time..

thanks

ps: i understand if msft wants to pull back a free feature.. but i also know that they are competing in the world of google.. which offers many of these services free to consumers..

I use the Outlook Connector to access my e-mail on my Office Live domain. [Windows Vista, Office 2007]

On Wednesday I noticed that I started getting the message "could not sign in" when trying to update my e-mail.

Today I found a discussion on another site that seems to indicate the problem is only happening to those who are trying to synchronize their data to a Windows Mobile device.

See this discussion:

http://office-outlook.com/outlook-forum/index.php/m/220213/#msg_220213

My wife doesn't use a PDA, and her Outlook Connector is working just fine on the same computer. So, I'm guessing that they're right.

Do any of you use Windows Mobile devices too?

That is nice...but what about those of us who have paid for Premium access?  It is quite frustrating to pay for something that has stopped working....if you need any additional information that could help your team fix these problems, please ask!  I know that I and probably most of the other people here would give you the information you may need.

as for what peterawest said, I don't have a PDA, but my LG CU500 GSM phone does sync with Outlook via bluetooth.  However I have not had any issues in the past.

Hi

We too are paying for a number of email accounts. We've only started experiencing this problem over the last day or so. We are all on the same custom domain, and yet some people have been able to continue working fine.

Mirroring Robert's comments above, I'm extremely frustrated that we are paying for this service specifically because we can use it with Outlook, yet it seems that it just isn't ready for business. It seems that you have known about this problem for over two weeks, but haven't:

a) warned people

b) apologised

c) offered a refund for failure to provide the promised service

Please will you give those of us who pay for this service and rely on it for business use a clear indication of when a fix will be issued. Otherwise we, like others I suspect, will be defecting to another provider.

I finally got my Outlook Connector to work again.  Here is what I did:

************************

1.) Make a back-up .pst file (for all accounts).

2.) Delete EVERY e-mail account including the accounts connected to Outlook Connector.  I had to create a temporary .pst file / Personal Folder in outlook.  Go to File -> Data File Management -> Add (in Outlook 2003)

3.) Close Outlook and un-install Microsoft Outlook Connector.

4.) Reboot computer (just in case).

5.) Re-install Outlook Connector.

6.) Start Outlook and sign-in to Microsoft Outlook Connector.

7.) Outlook connector did not sync for me the first time.  Closing then re-opening Outlook seemed to make it work.

8.) Wait for everything to sync then load your .pst file(s).

9.) Re-create all of your non-Microsoft Outlook Connector e-mail accounts.

10.) Delete the temporary .pst file you created in step number 2 if you are not using it now.

************************

It's clunky, but it worked for me...good luck!

Mike in London UK, you have two errors:

The 4350 error refers to your junk lists.  There is an email address that is likely malformed in your safe sender list or blocked sender list.  If you remove that bad entry from Outlook’s lists, the error will go away.

The 4402 issue refers to a folder that seems to exist on the web but not in Outlook.  To fix this error, you need to remove your connector account from Outlook and re-add it again.  Be sure to make a backup PST before removing the account in case you have any changes that have not yet synchronized.  This was likely what Robert's steps fixed.

The above steps will likely help you, Eric and anyone else receiving those error codes.

Jared,

Why would I (and all the others) suddenly have these problems with this version of Outlook Connector?  Everything used to stay in sync, adding or deleting folders, e-mail, etc. so this doesn't make sense to me.

Doing what I did before seemed to work..for 2 days, now Outlook Connector is not syncing again.  Here is the message:

********************

Time: 10/5/2007 9:28:35 AM

Error in Mail

There is an error synchronizing your mail account. Please verify your account has been configured correctly by first accessing your mail on the web.

Error: 4402. Client. Client FolderId dc484e24-7346-11dc-96f1-0014a48e9822 is not found in the request.

*********************

I know you said error # 4402 is related to the folder issues, but why now?  Why suddenly in this version on Outlook Connector is syncing folders (new folders or folders that have been re-named) becoming an issue?

If this version of Outlook Connector is becoming confused about folder changes (perhaps it no longer know which folder version should take precedence), then perhaps you should add a pop-up box where Outlook Connector asks for guidance on which folder should take precedence, be deleted, etc. so everything can be in sync again.

If I and the other Outlook Connector users will have to delete everything in Outlook and start all over every time we make changes to folders, this will be quite inconvenient to say the least.

I hope you are able to find a resolution to this issue.

Thanks!

J. Z, you need the Outlook Connector account to be the default in Outlook.  Try setting it as the default in the Outlook account manager.  If that doesn't work, you may need to start with a new profile, add the connector first, and then add your other accounts (note that if an Exchange account is in your profile it will always be the default).

Jeff, calendar sync to Windows Live requires an MSN Premium or Office Live Premium account.

Unfortunately it doesn't respond AGAIN. I then have to start it up again and it performs a detect & repair. Once this is done it works fine again?? Can anyone tell me why this is happening or how to fix it?

Hi all, I'm using Outlook Connector version 12.0.4518.1063 along with Outlook 2003 on Windoes Vista Ultimate. At first everything worked fine - all my emails came through and all was well. I then closed outlook down and re-opened about an hour later. Unfortunately when I reopened it the following happened:

- The program hangs & does not respond. After waiting a long time I give in & close it down.

- When I reopen it tries to load in safe mode. Again it hangs and doesn't respond. After waiting a long time I give in & close it down.

- On this third open a "detect and repair" occurs and after a while says it's finished.

- Then all of a sudden it works perfectly again & outlook opens no problem.

The annoying thing is that this happens frequently but there doesn't seem to be any pattern as to when it happens. Sometimes when I start my computer up and try to open outlook it just doesn't open until I go through the whole process.

Can anyone out there advise me or help?

Thanks

Have a problem with OC and OL2003 after installing Office 2003 Service Pack 3. Config is Office 2003 SBE, Windows Vista Home Premium.

This is on a user's PC I support, not my own, so excuse any information I am uncertain about. However, I did install everything for them.

Installed OC and had it working fine with their free Hotmail account. I believe it was 12.0.4518.1063 from the start, but I didn't look at the version until she had a problem. I did not install it more than once, so I presume this is the only version I ever had.

Then:

On Oct 16 I installed FrontPage 2003.

On Oct 17 I installed Office 2003 Service Pack 3.

Now the Hotmail signin in OC fails 100% of the time with an error saying:

Sign-in failed. Outlook Connector has encountered an error. Please restart Outlook. If the issue continues, open the Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs and repair Outlook Connector. If this does not fix the issue, contact Support.

Did all the above. Doesn't help.

Naturally it works 100% of the time via the web browser. I've read everything above.

The only fact I am unsure about is whether it was working after I installed FP2003 but before O2K3/SP3. It was a very short time period (half a day). Not sure she knows and I can't get in touch with her right now.

I could uninstall FP2003, but I cannot uninstall O2K3/SP3, except by uninstalling all of Office. UGH!

Any ideas?

Hi, firstly thanks for the Outlook Connector - it is wonderful how much faster it is than the HTTP connection from Outlook.

However, the Outlook Connector isn't downloading all of my sent messages correctly. For some of my older sent messages, I get a completely empty message, with a subject, date, and accurate message size, but blank body. This seems to happen only with plain text messages.

Closer investigation shows the internet headers from the options dialog box contains the complete message in URL-encoded form. The message source looks like:

curmbox=XX&a=XX&_HMaction=Send&login=XX&msg=XX&numatt=0&msghdrid=XX&encodedto=x%40hotmail%2ecom&deleteUponSend=0&newmail=new&to=x%40hotmail%2ecom&subject=XX

&body=[URL-encoded message body]

Finding these messages using the web interface, the full text is there, but messages have a "Continue composing this message" button as though the message had been saved as a draft and never sent. I suppose this could make it a Windows Live Mail issue really? (but it used to work OK with the HTTP outlook interface).

Hello.  Some of you have received the following error,

Error: 4102. Client. Cannot change immutable data: MessageClass.

This is a known issue and we are working on a fix.  In the mean time, to avoid this issue, do not make client-side changes to items (marking items as read/unread, adding categories, flagging items, etc.).

If you are in this situation, you can either wait for a fix or backup your data to PST by using Outlook's Import/Export wizard, remove your account from Outlook and re-add it back to Outlook.

We apologize for the inconvenience and will have a fix rolled out as soon as possible.

I think that Jared's comment:

"This is a known issue and we are working on a fix.  In the mean time, to avoid this issue, do not make client-side changes to items (marking items as read/unread, adding categories, flagging items, etc.)."

...will go down in the annals of marvelous but impossible suggestions.  If you READ your email (why else would one HAVE an email account??) you create the immutable class error.  So the suggestion is that we uninstall and reinstall our MS Connector accounts every single time we read an email.

Nothing personal, I work in software and so have made my own share of funny suggestions.  But this is classic.

I'm a Microsoft Small Business Partner, though a small one (just the two of us). I've moved our own accounts to Office Live Premium (we use email and sharepoint) and switched off our Exchange server (think of the power saving). I also advise businesses as to the suitability of systems like Office Live, so I wanted to get some real experience with it before I push endless clients towards Microsoft.

The web-side I'm quite happy with. Outlook Connector, however, has been a nightmare. This REALLY needs fixing with some urgency - at the moment I can't recommend Office Live to anyone who wants to access it from Outlook.

We use Vista Business with Office 2007. Outlook Connector Build is 1063. It works for a while, but then email stops sync'ing. If I go through the export/uninstall/reboot/reinstall/config routine it works again for a short while but stops.

I also noticed that calendar items downloaded are 1 hour out. Could this time difference cause the problem ?

Today I got a more detailed error report so I'm posting in case it helps. By the way - I can read the mail just fine on the web and contrary to the report below, email ISN'T sync'd.
