Announcing the Release of Office 2007 Service Pack 2!

The Outlook team is very pleased to announce the official release of Office 2007 Service Pack 2, the culmination of months of hard work to bring our users performance and reliability improvements which have been tested and shown to significantly improve the speed and responsiveness of Outlook! This Service Pack is the result of a large and directed effort to make your Outlook 2007 experience great and we think that you will be pleasantly surprised.

The Outlook team targeted your most common daily workflows and made them faster and more dependable. Significant improvements were also made in the areas of launching, synchronizing and reliably searching with Outlook 2007. Users with small to average size mailboxes will see a 26% performance increase and users with large mailboxes will see a 35% performance increase in the following areas:

  • Faster startup and more reliable shutdown
  • Faster folder switching between folders with a large number of messages
  • Better overall responsiveness when performing common tasks

For more detailed information on Service Pack 2 performance benchmarking read the following report from Principled Technologies, an independent 3rd party performance analysis company. The report includes detailed test results on different hardware types and with both small and large mailboxes, so it will give you an idea of how much faster Outlook will perform based on your environment.

We previously blogged about the February Cumulative Update which was a large collection of fixes designed to quickly address problems that were preventing Outlook 2007 deployments. Service Pack 2 is a collection of those fixes and more that has been thoroughly tested and all Office 2007 users should feel confident installing it on their machines. To experience these improvements install the service pack today and let us know how much faster and better Outlook is for you!

For more information about Outlook SP2 improvements see the whitepaper here.

You can use Microsoft Update to install Office 2007 Service Pack 2 by clicking here and then choosing “Check for updates” in the left-hand column.

Note: Upon successful installation of the update, the first time Outlook is run there will be a one-time delay as Outlook optimizes your data files as shown by a progress dialog (pictured below). After this initial process, performance will be improved. If you have already installed the February Cumulative Update Outlook will not need to repeat this optimization, so you will not see this one-time delay on startup.

Now that Office 2007 SP2 is available, can we discuss the various /admin install point methods?

Outlook 2007 Install only:

Since the Office 2007 setup uses "chaining" to run the patches post installation...I used the Original install + a 15 MB Feb. CU rollup.

Now...do I have to replace it with this 290 MB Full Office 2007 SP2?  It REALLY increases the install time!! 3-5 times slower...

Grrrrrrr.  I loved slip streaming the network install points...

More than 2 years, I have a bug reported to the escalation support. This has not been fixed with SP1 and SP2 again not. It is not a trivial matter. Can I get an answer to my Question "why must users live with Bugs?", although this well known and has been confirmed by Microsoft.

Thanks

I installed the service pack and I noticed that outlook became much more responsive.

Clicking email subject loads the body faster, clicking on folders load faster, double clicking an email opens the mail window faster.

I just have to check one more think but it will take me 1-2 days to be sure...

After 2-3 power on - hibernate cycles on windows XP, outlook was almost freezing until mail send-receive was completed. If this issue is also fixed, well done guys!

Actually, my speed decreased substantially. Vista SP1, 2 GB, AMD dual core system. Images load very slowly in messages, and switching between messages sometimes brings up the dreaded (not responding) parenthetical message in the title bar.

Hi,

Apologies for leaving a comment on a different topic, but I just cannot find a way to post my question. Previously there was a post on how to keep to do items for emails that are archived. The explanation was good but as some people commented, I do not have a “Display reminders and tasks from this folder in the To-Do Bar” to check box in the "mailbox properties" dialog. I would like to know the cause for this. Could somebody help? I would find it very useful to be able to flag an email, mark it as completed, then archive the email without deleting it on my completed tasks to do list. Thank you very much in advance.

We have previously installed Office 2007 with SP1 by installing the SP via the updates folder. I am now looking for information regarding installing SP2 to my enterprises via SMS. I have extracted the SP but I can find no info on how to deploy SP2 using SMS

There haven't been any noticable speed differences in any of my Office 2007 programs with SP2.  Related, IE8 doesn't open some websites (G-rated), or many links.  I'm thinking of rolling back to IE7.  At least it was stable.

Are you aware of the issue of applying the Office 2007 SP2 and it breaking the Outlook Global Address list?  Referenced Below:

I have seen the issues on Windows XP and Windows Vista clients.  As soon as you remove the the Service Pack, all functionality is restored.

Just a note that the Outlook community is finding out the SP2 breaks Desktop Alerts - they sometimes work after reboot, but most often not.  Very frustrating.....

I'm eagerly anticipating installing Outlook 2007 but am not sure if I will loose all my old e-mails and addresses when I upgrade.  Can someone advise?

Wow....I am not quite sure, but it seems that when SP-2 was loaded, Outlook starts up really SLOW.  Once it gets loaded, all is good.  I have deleted a lot of my old E-Mails and created several .psts but to no avail.  I am running Dual Core AMD (3800@2GHz) with Vista.  This is really really slow.  Any thoughts?

during this "one-time delay as Outlook optimizes your data files".. is it redownloading all the user's mail or reorganizing it locally? (we're worried about flooding the network if it's a redownload).

thanks!

I've tried installing Microsoft Office 2007 SP2 twice and the installation will not complete.  Any idea why this is happening or what I can do to complete the install?  This time, it's two thirds complete and appears to be hanging after 24 hours.

Jason - the "one-time delay as Outlook optimizes your data files" does not re-download the mailbox over the network. As you suspected, Outlook is reorganizing data inside the local copy of the mailbox stored on the hard drive.

XP and Vista (x86 and x64):

SP2 - Address Book Issues.  Cannot change to another address book.

SP2 - Cannot create a new profile (Will not validate name).

SP2 - Periodic freeze while Outlook is talking to the server.  This often happens in the middle of typing something, not just at startup when you would expect it.

SP2 is much faster but we have a few bugs in Outlook that are driving the corporate types crazy.

The biggest change in SP2 that most users will actually notice is buried deep on line 481 of the changes spreadsheet:

"Users cannot select which pages to print in a message item."

The fact you couldn't do this previously in 2007 was a MAJOR flaw, and quite frankly made Microsoft look enviromentally unaware. Why should you have to print every page of an email if I only want the first, particularly as most emails have disclaimers about saving paper at the bottom that you couldn't avoid printing!

Well done for fixing it, but you should make more of a big deal about it...it doesn't seem to be in any of the release documentation for SP2 apart from the one line in a spreadsheet, meaning that people stuggling to work out why they can't print emails properly won't realize they have to download SP2. I trust you will allow this post through as this information is not anywhere else on the internet atm, it seems.

This practical change has saved millions of trees, so bravo!
