Owen,

This sounds really nice. In particular I like the navigation along the side of the screen. Can this also be hidden? I've found that at times I need the screen realestate more than I need the navigation aid.

What about showing/hiding the navigation pane when I hover over it with mouse. Like in VS.NET 2003.

Excellent! This solves probably the biggest hurdle I faced when initially learning OneNote. Once I learned how to use folders all was well, but this is just more user friendly and logical. It sounds like OneNote 12 is beginning to think like we think rather than the other way around.

I want some more...

thank you owen. the organizational structure looks good. so.. going by the images that you have posted i will be able to open and close individual sections from different notebooks, as & when i need them or will every section open each time i change notebooks?

also as you have noted screen space is often important - will sub-folders be collapsable in onenote 12?

Yes, this is my question also - I want to have granularity in deciding which sections of which notebooks are tabbed along the top at any given time.

On a larger note, might one create 'virtual note books' - that is, a notebook which consist of shortcuts to sections in other notebooks?

Example - say I have a notebook for each major team/project. Each one has a section called 'budget'. Could I then create a virtual notebook called 'budgets' which consisted of pointers to all the 'budget' sections in those other notebooks?

Great work so far - I am really enjoying getting to know this product!

This is a great modification. Is it set up so that I could "enroll" selected notebooks? For example, I could set up a note book for each legal case I have (Facts, Research, Etc.) Each team member could take notes on their personal machine and then move the notes to the appropriate notebook, kept on a server, for the team on that case. Then I could enroll in the notebooks that are my cases (for searching etc.). Then when the case is over, the notebook could be archived with the rest of the file. Or am I missing the point?

gtarcea/westray - we're still evaluating which pieces of UI make sense to make hideable; this is good feedback for us, thanks! (btw lest it seem obvious that everything should be hideable, there is some small but significant rate at which every core of piece of UI that can be hidden gets hidden by folks unintentionally, who are then hosed for a while - only reason we make these decisions after some observation & deliberation)

confuchsia - cool handle btw - currently you can only hide (close) entire notebooks, not individual sections. this is a deliberate change from the first release due to some folks accidentally closing sections and not knowing how to get them back. (btw, this is a particularly nasty form of the problem i mentioned above because for those folks, their data is gone unless/until they figure out how to get it back.) by always showing all the files in that folder on disk, we prevent sections from getting lost. we create an "archive" notebook for you in 12 that you can move sections to when you're done with them. that said, jury's still out for me on whether it's too limiting to restrict this to notebooks. good feedback for us, thanks.

subfolders are not currently collapsible - but this is another place where we're actively collecting feedback.

leMel - on the virtual notebooks, absolutely - check out my latest post on linking related notes together for all sorts of information on this.

HBW - nope, you've got the point exactly. (in fact, your particular scenario is one of the ones we were designing for.) we simply refer to this as a notebook being "open" or not. when a notebook is closed, it's just a normal folder on disk (or a server) containing .one files for each of the sections. when you click file>open notebook, you can pick any folder and then it becomes "open" or "enrolled". (we occasionally also use the term "subscribed".) it's then searchable, browsable, can be taken offline, updates automatically, etc. once you're done with it you can just close it to "archive" it.

thankyou for your response owen. a question and perhaps to clarify - i feel i may have misunderstood you here.

So, as leMel more succinctly put it,and as i understand your reply, in onenote12 i won't be able to open & close individual sections? (therefore having multiple notebooks as it were open at one time)

But when a section is closed wont it be easily visible now (therefore readily retrievable) from the notebooks bar on the left whenever one needs to use it again?

So with the addition of the new “Navigation Bar” on the left-hand side of the screen there are now 3 separate (and some might say ‘far flung’) navigation areas.

...I’ve got to say that I have never understood why OneNote doesn’t display its note structures all in one place, in the form of a standard directory tree.

The structure of all the elements would be extremely clear, they’d be assessable at all times (I am always forgetting about notes simply because I can’t see them) and would all be collected in the same place.

On the face of it, wouldn’t that be a much more straightforward approach???

There must be a reason why you have not done this but I can’t figure out what it might be.

The current way I get around to having multiple (squadron) notebooks is by placing folder shortcuts (.lnk) inside that main "My Notebook" folder. The .lnk points to folder location elsewhere on my HD or even on the LAN. It works pretty well, until the lnk breaks.
