This was the event I was dreaming to go since it was announced last year.

Too bad I had already planned, booked and prepaid my vacations around the PDC (I'm from Argentina) from me and my family.

I 100% agree with mykl. Hold the conference anyway and talk about all the recently announced / released technologies. Only marketing people care about new announcements coinciding with the PDC. Us technical people just want to learn details of what's available and how to use it. One of the weaknesses of past PDCs is that much of the technology we learn about at the conference isn't in a released, usable state for months afterward.

I am very disappointed. First that it is being postponed (just as well say cancelled). Secondly that they waited so late to make the decision. It is too late to try to sign up for TechEd (it takes almost a month to get travel authorized around here). I have to make a decision on a conference very early in the year. This kind of action makes for alot of pain for a whole lot of people. I agree with mykl. Hold it anyway and focus on what is coming out right now. I think most would agree we are still trying to get our arms around VS 2005, .NET 3.0, Vista, etc. Orcas, Longhorn, Silverlight, are all future products for a great many of us in the corporate/enterprise world.

Yes, much like rtesch, I'm SO disappointed. I intentionally didn't book TechEd because PDC is so much more up my alley. Now, trying to book TechEd (with no early bird discount) is going to be tricky.

Organizers, this was a really bad decision and makes us all more than a little jittery... these conferenes are a crucial part of my training plan.

This is extremely sad to read. I decided to skip Teched in Orlando just to go to PDC instead and now I won't have time to be able to fix everything practical for Teched (live in Sweden).

Does anyone here know if VSLive and DevConnections is anything worth looking into as a substitute for PDC??

Microsoft should not have announced a conference and then cancel it when the only reasons they give is entirely in their control. This case is especially bad since they did not make the announcement early enough for people to reschedule for TechEd.

As far as there are not enough new topics to justify a PDC, maybe WCF, WPF, Expression Studio, Vista, Orcas, and LINQ are not new to Microsoft but for us corporate developers they are. We depend on PDCs to provide in-depth information that is focused on the developer.

Unlike Microsoft, I thought the timing of the PDC was perfect. Microsoft should re-instate the PDC and focus on all the new technologies that are just now ready to be used.

This just sucks.

As others have noted, TechEd could have been an option.

And, if Microsoft doesn't know their release schedule, the who does?

Are Windows Server 2008, SQL Server code name “Katmai,” Visual Studio code name “Orcas” and Silverlight all ahead of schedule?

Is something else missing/slipping?

I look to the PDC for answers, not more mystery.
