And all this is somehow easier than just letting the UI put in channel numbers > 10000?

But seriously, the UI stuff is a limitation throughout a bunch of places, where this change is isolated to just 2 source files. Sometimes it's counter-intuitive what is risky and what is not--this is less risky because it's a fairly straightforward algorithm, not something that can change the look & feel of the entire product.

Regressions == bad
