SQL Server 2005 SP3, SQL Server 2005 SP2 CUs, or SQL Server 2008 may cause XP SP2 to restart

The executable files included in SQL Server 2005 SP3, SQL Server SP2 CUs (Hotfixes) and SQL Server 2008 have been manifested to include Vista and Windows 2008 information. Due to a bug in Windows XP SP2 without the hotfix or XP SP3 release you may encounter one of the following bugs. We are still evaulating how common this issue is, but at this time only a small number of SQL Server customers have encountered.

(1) An application that uses the Sxs.dll file crashes when you run the application on a Windows XP-based computer. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943232 for more information.

(2) The computer may restart when you add a manifest that has the Windows Vista extension to an .exe file or to a .dll file in Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921337 for more information.

If you are not trying to install SQL Server, then something totally different is going on. You should contact Windows experts to help you out.

Is the installation going to be fixed, or is the documentation going to be changed to indicate that it does not work with XP SP2?

I had this same problem when applying SP3 to SQL Server 2005 Dev Edition on an XP SP2 box. I was vexed as to why my system would just reboot any time I tried to modify my SQL installation until I came across this post.

I updated XP to SP3 and then the SQL SP3 installation went through without a hitch.

Thanks! (No thanks to M$)...
