Great! I don't quite understand the difference between dx9 and dx10. I have a dx10 compatible card (8800gts), wil I have to download dx10? Thanks, Jim

Thanks for your update Phil, Like many, I have had a great time with FSX since its release.  Certainly those wanting a much better experience will need to upgrade to Core Duo's, more ram, Vista and DX10 graphics card, as I have.  I want Aces to continue to push the boundaries, if FS11 requires ground up work, to take advantage of more recent developments, and its not backward compatible, then so be it.  I think we all need to remember that such a wonderful piece of software that most, if not everyone can afford, is putting us in the pilot seat, and a fantastic feeling it is.  Good luck with the future, I love that at least you are talking to the community, as apposed to the past. ps could we have more shots of DX10 in bigger formats please.  Keep up the good work

Jim Greenfield: to unlock the DX10 capabilities of your 8800GTS, you need to be running Windows Vista.

Call me odd but I think the DX9 version water looks much more realistic.

Niz,

I was thinking the same thing?  The distant cloud reflections in the DX10 picture almost look like their hovering above the sea rather than reflecting in it, the colour also looks a little overly saturated?

I am running Vista. After I download the SP2 when it's available, how do I 'unlock' the DX10 capabilities? Also, will this in any way affect X-Graphics? Thanks, Jim

Even if it looks better than DX9, what it doesn't, to "unlock" the DX10 features, you have to run Vista.........and this is the real "no go" in this story.

I keep my FS9 with all the hard earned and costly addon's.....just waiting for the next release of FS.

FSX will go down the drain like FS2000 did some years ago.

Only my opinion.

Crowsnest

sorry, but to me, the dx9 water looks much more realistic than the dx10... let alone the vista issue... dx9 is a keeper.

Big truth. Fs9 was a success. Came in the right moment, and is still perfect.

FSX will fall into oblivion like fs2000 did.

I feel NOW would be the moment to start designing a new sim. Let the people be happy with their computers, using fs9, and by the time u have a new sim, dx10 will have been around for a while and will be the standard.

Games give me 80fps (sliders to the max), fsx gives me 25fps (far from maxed out sliders)... am i the only one to notice that is not a SMALL PROBLEM?!?

I have to agree with Cavok the DX9 snapshot looks better. Now granted its a still-image so we dont see how it looks when actually flying but based on the photo I would not be upgrading my card anytime soon

Very pretty - it looks exactly like a high quality video game.

Isn't it rather a shame that water doesn't look like that in the real world.

Apart from the horrible bloom effect (which makes me want to clean my glasses), the DX9 picture is much more realistic...

I look forward to being able to use the bloom effect with minimal impact on framerate.

The DX10 water reflections look nice, but water (especially smaller lakes and rivers), when viewed from higher altitudes in real life look very dark, almost jet black and opaque. In FSX the water is much too bright, pristine and sparkly.

I know you guys think fs9 may be better. Although at first glance fsx does not appear to be that much of an improvement. The thing I am most happy with is the improvement of the roads the waterway and terrain resolution. I drove a semi ten years around the united states and to be able to hop in the plane and follow the roads and correct waterways and it looks so realistic I am very happy. I can travel to any of those place I used to drive to and its great.  Its something that fs-9 has but everything is less accurate. I am very optomistic for the future sims.

I've just upgraded to a Radeon 4850 for this game and it still runs rubbish. Perhaps another company could do better. The buildings still look amateurish and overall I am mystified as to why such poor graphics needs such expensive hardware. Look, you've had to release two service packs because you got it wrong at the start. A cynic would say you are in hock with  mfrs to push sales of their average hardware. I'm not a cynic, just a disappointed, and $400 poorer, gamer.

Jim, though you have a DX10 Compatible card, It doesn't mean that you don't ned to download DX10 It just informs you that the card is compatible with DX10. So, you still need to download DX10...
