Quick Search allows you to filter down the items in view to only those that match the text that you type. Not that I'm entirely sure of the usefulness therein, but it's still nifty.

Is there spellchecking when adding captions/tags/etc? Mispelling words may cause problems when searching in the future.

Is there a technical reason for not searching the middles of words, or just because it would probably confuse a lot of people?

This Week with Windows - Week of June 23, 2006

Welcome to This Week with Windows! Performance is another one, but not the primary reason.

Although we don't spell-check tags or captions, you will notice that when you add a new tag, it will match your existing tags, so this is one way to reduce spelling errors (assuming that you typed it correctly to begin with).

Since Tags are user-defined, and often contain the names of people and places, spell check would probably get in the way more than it would help most people.

Thanks for the suggestion on searching. If your tags are set up in such a way that your Mom has her own Tag, you could probably still build the 'Family but not Mom' query using multi-selection in the Nav Tree (just use control-click to de-select Mom once you have selected Family).

Scott Dart [Microsoft]

re: Quick Search in the Windows Photo Gallery

I strongly believe that consistency across all of Vista is a must. The integrated search is a major new feature and this type of different behaviour will annoy/frustrate users and even cause a reduction of use or no use at all.

As to is it needed to aid searching? I already use this type of feature heavily. I only got a digital camera last year, and was immediately frustrated by available ways to manage photos.

A search/tagging system such as that in Vista will be a MAJOR seller for the product.

Some/many users used to doing this type of search in search engines (more during long term life of Vista). As Vista opens up the ability to manage all of your data (ie not just photos) teh need for the common experience/behaviour will grow.

My ranting and ravings on this are at http://phototagging.cloudedup.com
