Error 1310 when installing VS from CD/DVD

There have been many problems recently with installation from the media that was handed out at the PDC and in various other places. One problem is caused by the disk label being burned incorrectly (VS install will fail). A second issue occurs during the installation of VSS (VSS install will fail). An error like this is shown:

"Error 1310.Error Writing to file: Microsoft.VisualStudio.SourceSafe.Interop.dll. Verify that you have access to that directory"

This happens when, for some reason, Windows Installer cannot write to the location where it tries to extract this file from its cab. Currently the best known work around for this issue, as well as disk label issue, is to copy the contents of the CD/DVD to the local hard disk and install directly from there.

# re: Error 1310 when installing VS from CD/DVD

Peter,
Has anyone looked into the install routines from the people doing sql server express. After each beta release and now the RC has required hard drive reformat due to sql express problems. The latest with 2005 RC dvd is
[10/02/05,14:37:20] Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition x86: ISetupManager::GetGlobalCustomProperty() failed to find global prop in CGenericComponent::GetGlobalCustomProperty()

Yes I did uninstall all previous beta products in the correct order and also ran the latest uninstall tool.

The reboot problem is trivial compared to the reformatting problem. I wonder a great deal about the people working on sql server express when they screw up a computer so bad with just the install and uninstall. I have had no problem with the rest of Visual Studio. The sql people are really making Microsoft look bad. From what I have heard my experiences are widespread. I have wasted many days because of this.

There is an article posted here: http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/06/14/429194.aspx

This explains how to use the uninstall tool that was shipped with all the SQL Betas. Hopefully that will help you clean up your machine without having to wipe out everything.

# re: Error 1310 when installing VS from CD/DVD

the problem I saw with FileMon is that the operation when it attempts a create of the file gets a "Name Collision" error.

The install is attempting to create the file in my case in C:\Windows\assembly\tmp\PUH5SG3Q.  This directory seems to be a strange format directory with only "assemblies" whatever they are, and at the time I look at it with the browser, there is no "tmp\PUH5SG3Q", so I can't get any other info.  I suspect that the copy of the cd contents to writable media should not fix the problem, but who knows.  I suspect a bad open with the tmp file somewhere else, but I don't know what is going on here.
