# This machine is disabled for file encryption

When I try to install, I get a "Windows Update Standalone Installer" error box.  Installer encountered an error: 0x8007177f .  This machine is disabled for file encryption.

Does my machine need to be able to do EFS to install PowerShell, or am I missing something else?

# re: Windows PowerShell 1.0 for Windows Vista

Thanks much guys, job well done! I want to personally thank you for saving me countless hours every day, and for exposing an interface that lets me use the system as if I was a part of it. Truly an example of how one small part changes the whole.

Failed to install Windows6.0-KB928439-x64 (Windows PowerShell 1.0 Installation Package for Windows Vista x64) on Longhorn Server 6001 x64 : "The update does not apply to your system"

On PowerShell website, we can see that this release should work for both Vista/Longhorn... but on the download page, only Vista versions are displayed...

Any idea?

Thanks

# re: Windows PowerShell 1.0 for Windows Vista

Another person that has got the Windows Update Standalone Installer Error.

This machine is disabled for File encryption.

Tuesday, January 30, 2007 5:49 PM by Davey

# re: Windows PowerShell 1.0 for Windows Vista

Regarding the install failures related to file encryption, this is due to a known issue with the installer.

The workaround is to enable EFS on your machine for a short time and install the package.

To enable EFS, press Windows-R and start gpedit.msc. Browse to Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Public Key Policies -> Encrypting File System -> (right-click) Properties, and set the EFS state to “Allow”.

To verify that the above worked, press Windows-R and start rsop.msc. Browse to the same path as above, and verify the setting.

If your domain administrator has disabled EFS, then you will not be able to enable it locally. In that case, you will have to depart the domain, complete the install, then rejoin the domain.

Apologies for the inconvenience. We are working on a fix for the issue.

# Powershell EFS Installer bug

I had PowerShell on my XP machine and loved it!  However, I just reloaded my machine with Vista and unfortunately the EFS installer issue is keeping me from successfully installing PowerShell.  The box is joined to our domain. Currently we have EFS turned off via a GPO since we have no Recovery Agents set up yet for the domain (soon perhaps, but not now).  I would love to install PowerShell on my new Vista box, but unjoining my PC from the domain just to install software is a rather large bug, and is not an option in my mind.  When can we expect this issue to be resolved?

This is a great product, and I look forward to using it in the future.  Thanks guys!

# re: Windows PowerShell 1.0 for Windows Vista

Just so everyone is aware, the following support article from Microsoft fixes the encrypting file system (EFS) issue:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933595

In the US, call Microsoft at the following support line and select the option for professional support (option #2):

1-800-936-4900

Ask for the hotfix related to the article ID 933595.  You do not have to have a support contract with Microsoft to get them to send you this hotfix.

If you follow the article's advice to the letter, you should have no problem installing powershell without first leaving the domain and turning on EFS.

This also removes the same issue for other related software installations, such as .NET Framework 3.5.

Hope this helps.

When I try to install the Vista version of Powershell, I get "Installer encountered an error 0x8007000d. The data is invalid." I see that other people are having trouble installing as well, but not this problem.

# re: Windows PowerShell 1.0 for Windows Vista

What is the deal with this?  Have vista ultimate with sp1 and getting the "Installer encountered an error: -x8007000d The data is invalid."  Did nobody test this package before it was released?  Have not turned on "EFS".  Need to install packages on my workstation that prereq powershell, but, can't because of this error.  Is there a real fix available?  The hotfix in kb933595 is supposed be in sp1.

# re: Windows PowerShell 1.0 for Windows Vista

Apparently from my experience and any others, the powershell install does not work on Vista.  Is there any relief in sight?  It is needed to install other applications that prereq it. Getting 0x8007000d error.  Have vista ultimate (32bit) with sp1.

# re: Windows PowerShell 1.0 for Windows Vista

Got "Windows Update Standalone Installer: Installer encountered and error: 0x8007000d, The data is invalid". I'm using Vista Ultimate SP1 x64. Just did a fresh install and completed all updates, upgraded to Installer 4.5 and .Net Framework 3.5.  Very frustrating.

"Got "Windows Update Standalone Installer: Installer encountered and error: 0x8007000d, The data is invalid". I'm using Vista Ultimate SP1 x64. Just did a fresh install and completed all updates, upgraded to Installer 4.5 and .Net Framework 3.5."

It finally worked! After 10 more tries, the only change I made was to go to this site: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ and found out that my Office 2k7 hadn't been properly activated. After activating it, Powershell seemed to install without a hitch. Coincidence???
