Out-*/Format-*

Don Jones has graciously offered to share a slide he uses as part of his Windows PowerShell Fundamentals course (http://www.scriptingtraining.com/ ) which shows the interaction between the pipeline, the out-* and format-* cmdlets. The attached slide illustrates how (sometimes) a picture is worth a thousand words.  Don has a great way of explaining complex concepts.

Thanks Don!

BTW - The slide is a build so run it in presentation mode.

# re: Out-*/Format-*

I can only assume that .pptx is a Office 2007 extension?

Yep.  You can get read it with PowerPoint 2003, if you download the "Compatibility Pack" at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en

it worked like a charm for me.

Yup. There's an Office 2007 compatibility pack (downloadable from Microsoft's site) which lets you open 2007 files in older versions of Office.

The link to the website is missing the leading "s".

# re: Out-*/Format-*

so if i download and install a 25 meg file then i'll get to see this slide... that's a pretty hefty tax... i'm gonna try it, but if the browser requires a reboot or something else goes wrong.... i may swear off powershell for a good five minutes.

okay... the office 2007 compatability pack indeed worked! it did require me to turn off outlook, but no browser restart needed (or anything else). powerpoint took quite some time to load -- but i think it was worth it in the end.

the animation was worth several dozen words, i think. ;-)

# @Jeffrey Snover

Links still looks broken to me, even after a refresh.

I could save it as a .ppt somewhere public, but since I don't own the content, I won't.

Actually, that link to "criptingcenter" is still a bit cryptic ;)

# re: Out-*/Format-*

one should probably mention that this pptx is worth more than thousand words as soon as you've recognized that you should view it in presentation mode with all the animation going on - before it was just worth a thousand ? when I looked at it.

# re: Out-*/Format-*

Hi,

I just discovered powershell !

But when i try to create a simple test file via this command for example :

PS> "hello world!" | out-file c:\test.txt

It returns me an error !

Is there a configuration that i missed ?!

Thanks,

savy.
