FSX Performance benchmarks by Toms' Hardware

I wrote an article up for the fsinsider site, which references the recent Toms Hardware graphics benchmark. That benchmark uses a variety of games across just about all recent hardware. It is a very good resource for guiding purchasing decisions.

You can read the full article here http://www.fsinsider.com/tips/Pages/GraphicsHardwareBenchmarks.aspx

And the Toms' benchmark can be found here http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics.html

I found the results interesting, and I hope you find the article useful.

I wouldn't really expect 8 series cards to show much difference over the 7 series, even with more mature drivers, since the game is essentially CPU bound.

What I find most interesting is that the ATI cards have such lower performance across the board.  It doesn't make sense to me that the video driver could have that kind of impact on a CPU bound game.

I know that this is offtopic but it this true?

Thanks a lot. Hope perfomance will be good

I think this chart shows pre-SP1 results. Surely SP1 would give a wider spread of results between cards at the top end, when running in the highest resolution and with the most onerous settings?

SillyEagle,

I have asked Tom's if SP1 was used, since its reduction in Draw and Set calls should show a reduction in being CPU-bound and  that should have enabled 8 series to show a little more legs. If you look at the numbers, at 10x7 the 7900 GS beats the 8800GTX as does the slower 8800GTS which is curious. And the ATI numbers are intriguing as well. Not that I have any explanation yet.

thats a total fake. the links in that article do take you to IGN, but nothing on IGN takes you to this article. and one of the forums found one of the screenshots on a virtual airliner page, as I recall.

good question, and one I have attempted to ask Tom's. If they reply I will update the post with the info.

I've only read the german version of that Tom's report, but they failed to mention whether they tested with SP1 installed or not.

Also, I really don't think that they benchmarked properly, because they usually only set the default sliders to maximum.

So I bet the framerate limiter was not set to unlimited, therefore distorting the results. I refuse to believe that none of these cards can get past the 24fps barrier, because even I have done that with my puny little 7950GT and a hefty overclock on a core 2 duo.

Just a question: Does FSX support SLI?

I bought a new PC with QX6800 and two 8800 Ultras

and I get 30FPS at max at JFK. I believe it's very low!

Would be nice if someone did a CPU comparison since FSX is more CPU-bound. Would it be better to get a faster duo-core or slower quad, for instance?

good suggestion, you should suggest it to Tom's with their feedback mechanism.

also here's a tip: turn your target simulation rate to unlimited it makes your FPS go higher
