Office - LCS 2005 (Enterprise IM product) can talk with MSN, Yahoo and AOL contacts

Just a quick post about this breaking news that came out from our group. Microsoft Office - LCS 2005 will have the connection pack that will allow linking MSN, Yahoo and AOL users to Enterprise IM. It turns out that, this will give access to about 400 million IM users to the companies using LCS software. (I will be working on a component that is related to this :).

From everything I've been reading about this, it sounds like this is just for "enterprise" IM, meaning if you bought the Yahoo! Enterprise IM software (whatever it's called).

But will this also impact just "regular" users of these IM products - do you know???

For those who care :), I got an explanation from an Analyst manager:

This is about connectivity for LCS 2005 customers to their customers, partners and colleagues who may be using the AOL, MSN and / or Yahoo the public instant messaging clouds. So, customers who deploy LCS 2005 and the connectivity pack will be able to view presence info and IM with buddies (customers, partners, colleagues) on any of the 3 public IM networks – but LCS 2005 and the LCS client is the point origin.

Also – those customers and partners who are on AOL, Yahoo and MSN will be able to see presence info and IM with the LCS 2005 users who have added them to their contact list. Connectivity is between LCS and the 3 public IM clouds (this is not interop between the public IM networks)

I don't know that "Trillian" (http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/) even deserves a mention. It's sort of the worst of all worlds. Each IM client has certain advantages (AIM uses direct-connect, YIM has great emoticons and webcam support and MSN.. uh.. I'm sure has decent things as well!).. and Trillian has very few and immature features.

My hope was that you could use your IM of choice, and then connect to other IM users of other systems. In other words, I like the look/feel of Yahoo! IM - and it would be able to IM with people who use Hotmail.. but sounds like not yet..
