Contest for free software

First person to respond to me and tell me what the following means and sends me their mailing address, I will send you a copy of Windows Server 2000. Yes, it is old software, but the upgrades are cheaper. Really, I just want to see how quickly one of these blog entries hit folks: What does the following vi command mean? s/;/\n/g

If I remember correctly, that would globly replace semicolons with line returns.

It replaces all occurences of ; with \n on the current line only. It is important to understand that global applies only to the current line. For a truly global edit that would apply to all lines, the s would have to be preceded by a % character. The \n is a single character, 00 in hex.

Oops, I wasn't finished. 00 is null, \n is how to enter null, not how to enter a line return. Similar to \n, \t is how to enter a horizontal tab.

Just got back from dinner. Wow, it only took 26 minutes ... actually a little longer than I thought it would take. Dustin, Daniel, and Gopinath did an awesome job at telling me the answer that I was originally thinking was right. But as it turns out, I forgot that 'g' was only for a single line. John's post was the one <b>true</b> answer. John doesn't need it because he is buying an MSDN Universal subscription. So, Dustin, due to the ambiguity of your response, I think you win regardless. Your statement I believe is true, but you missed 'globally <b>on the current line</b>'. Send my your address, and it is yours.
