Reckless

Rebecca Dias - Product Manager, Microsoft Corporation

What do you identify as?

Is there such as thing as a Web services developer?

What do you identify as?  A SQL dev or a SQL Server dev? Information Systems dev?  VB, C#, or Java?  J2EE/EJB developer?  MSMQ or MQSeries?

Do you identify as a distributed systems developer?

Why?  I am curious to know if you would benefit in a trade show that was 100% dedicated to distributed systems development on the Microsoft platform.  How do you build services for mulitple client technologies - Smart Client, Portals, Business Processes, and Services?

What primary motivations drive you to a show?

Although I don't develop code there is still a great interest in Web Services from a Security and Technical Architecture perpective.

A widespread Web Services deployment gone bad will make the security and compliance issues companies face today seem trivial when business users start utilising enterprise data sources via their Office desktop applications.

Web Services are a disruptive technology which is what makes them so powerful and exciting. Get your Security and Technical infrastructure right and reap the rewards.

It would be great to see some information targeted at this audience otherwise I'll be force to learn how to program...

Rebecca, yes, I believe there is such a thing as a Web services developer, we actually have quite a few working with my team now.

What do I identify as? I suppose I am currently a Web services designer/architect.

When you say "100% dedicated to distributed systems development on the Microsoft platform" do you mean exclusively as I'm not sure distributed systems and single platform solutions really go together?

What shape would such a show take? Microsoft & Partners that help integrate all this MS/non MS-based stuff using the Windows platform & tools, or only about Microsoft-based solutions end-to-end?

I have sponsored a Developer's Conference that is an open industry event 2 years in a row now, the http://www.sellsbrothers.com/conference. It has proven to be non-political to date and really a lot of fun. I am not sure if we did an entire tradeshow if it would be as friendly nor as beneficial. It is very different from a full blown show. Essentially, this conference is targeted at a lot of innovation.

My thought is that it takes a lot of technology to build a Web service. Sometimes there is Host Integration Server, MSMQ, Enterprise Services, and other technologies in the background and Web services creating the front end facade. Also, with Indigo coming down the pipe, it will be important to show the marriage between today's stacks and Indigo.

So when I say distributed here, I mean location, not platform. For Web services, we could have experts discuss interoperability caveats etc. We could also have partner companies discuss heterogenous management of systems.

I have seen other tradeshows that tried to be the kitchen sink come and go. They essentially tried to make a single show where multiple vendors were essentially trying to push the benefits of their platform. I think it is hard to find a target audience where you have 10 vendors presenting similar technology. It is hard to determine who should come to a show like that.
