Specs committed to be royalty free

I get this question a lot.

"What are the IP terms associated with the WS-* specifications?"

So we put up a Web site to let people know.  Check it out.

"Microsoft is committed to license its essential technology on royalty-free, and other reasonable and non-discriminatory terms for the following Web service specifications."

So in other words, all of the things on this list are entirely useless and the technologies should all be avoided. That you think you can "license" a spec is truely a sign of how lost you are in the Modern Computer World. Everyone's had it with non-open standards -- get with the program.

Please Jeff, explain in more detail. I am having a hard time following your line of reasoning. Are you telling me that SOAP is useless? Why are so many businesses benefiting from it?
