and Tim are right about Contract first. I would expect no less from one of the Fathers of distributed computing. I learned this lesson first hand over eight years ago working with Charles White and Eva Guo on a project at HP. Yes, we built service-oriented systems back then too!

Don Box is giving a talk on Metadata Soup: Contracts, Models, and Types on the Connected Systems Infrastructure Track at Tech Ed this year. There is no doubt in my mind that he will turn this topic upside down

Aaron has been blogging a lot about contract first and proposed a birds of a feather session. Vote for it and attend.
We have an exceptional line-up of speakers. This year's event promises to give you the tools to build powerful connected systems on the Microsoft platform that can integrate with third party systems.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Register for the event today to get the early bird discount.

Track Abstract:

Connected Systems are becoming pervasive as a result of current economic and technological drivers for companies to be more agile, drive down costs, and integrate heterogeneous, globally dispersed systems. New applications no longer live in single process or machine silos. Applications need to be designed to be a part of a connected network of services to build systems that span multiple machines and reach beyond corporate firewalls. Also, in order to increase an organization's agility when responding to market and changing strategic requirements, the information flow between services that carry out these business operations must be streamlined.

The Connected Systems Infrastructure track is designed to help you understand how to design, implement, secure, deploy, and manage connected systems on the Microsoft platform for automating your companies information flow to achieve streamlined operations and greater levels of business agility. Architects, Developers, and IT Operators will learn about our existing and next generation distributed systems technologies for building Connected Systems covering the Windows Server System, Visual Studio .NET and the .NET Framework (ASP.NET, MSMQ, .NET Remoting, Enterprise Services, WSE), business process management with BizTalk Server, integration of IBM mainframe and midrange systems with Host Integration Server, integration of retail systems with Commerce Server, and our unified messaging infrastructure for Longhorn, Indigo.
In practical terms, considerations of state crop up on every level of the stack: stateful vs. stateless instances, stateful communication channels, state management services, state in databases. You can build your application to send work to data, or you can build your application to bring data to work. You can think of read-only and read-write data as different in kind, or as two ends of a continuum along which all data lies. Using real applications as examples, learn a Service Oriented perspective on all these issues. After this session, you'll be able to answer questions such as: how issues of state impact design, what special deployment issues arise from stateful, and how to manage connections to data.

This system connects a variety of real-time monitoring equipment which measure clinical entities like cardiac parameters, respiratory parameters, non-invasive pressure, invasive pressure, pulse oxymetry, temperature and cardiac output for the day to day activities. It securely (WS-Security, WS-Policy) and efficiently (WS-SecureConversation) exposes this vital sign information from within the dispersed complexes of the medical center and beyond via a federation of Web services. The system allows surgeons, anesthesiologists, physicians, interns, nurses, and medical students to securely monitor, mark with events, and replay later, this clinical data. First, you can't talk about much of anything in the world of real applications without considering how you'll eventually deploy and run your apps. You must keep those issues in mind from the moment you start designing. Second, and more importantly, Service Oriented applications are easier to deploy and manage than other applications, because their decoupled nature turns one big management problem into several smaller ones with very clear relations between the parts.

I am desperately behind on all the wonderful things
I want to blog about. I feel a major
sense of relief now that the PDC is
over with and Indigo is disclosed. My
dialogs will be far more fluent moving forward as a result of this. As
a Microsoft employee the strongest anticipation is felt right before the PDC, more
so than the anticipation of a product release, think of it like the world cup or the
Olympics. It was awesome to see that
the blogging developer community was also duly excited. Thanks
for your support! <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns =
"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />We
really appreciated it.

Before I start summarize my experience at the PDC, I
wanted to give you a heads up on some of the great work the Industry players participating
in the Web services workshops are doing.

A couple of weeks ago, Microsoft and 6 other vendors
participated in a face-to-face interoperability
workshop for Reliable Messaging. The feedback was that it was a resounding success.
There is a discussion group<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns =
"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /> for
folks to continue dialog on the specs and the scenarios that were tested. A series
of companies, including MS,
<st1:mswterms w:st="on">IBM</st1:mswterms>
, and Systinet, have endpoints posted and there are more on the way.

At the Gates/Mills
event in NY last September, Bill Gates stated that Microsoft intends to submit
completed specifications to a standards-setting organization, and that Microsoft is
committed to license this necessary technology on a royalty-free basis. To ensure
that this promise can be delivered, all workshop participants need to make a similar
commitment for their contributions.

The excitement around the WS-* specifications is growing.
Customers want to see implementations of these specifications become a reality. I
have already been in dialog with large enterprise customers who have actually implemented
early versions of the WS-ReliableMessaging specification. They see the value in this
technology and are willing to put $$s into implementing their own frameworks early.

The workshop
process and feedback process is proving invaluable to polish these specifications
before being submitted to a standards body.

I can’t wait to see the progress made in a year’s time.
Interoperability is critical for companies to build SOAs that will bring their IT
departments into the next series of decades of computing.

been hearing a lot of feedback from customers asking for more transparency on which

started a web-site to help disseminate more information on the workshops that
Microsoft and our collective Industry partners have been holding to present the work
in the WS-* protocols specifications, gather feedback, and collaborate on interoperability. The
next workshop will be an interop workshop for Reliable Messaging. The workshops timeline
can help folks track the progress of the specifications.

WS-Security
is already deployed in numerous production systems. OASIS
is close to recommendation on the WS-Security spec. I
feel that WS-Security is a great example of how specifications should be designed. Even
before the OASIS ratification will occur, WS-Security has already been widely adopted
by customers and numerous vertical standards bodies are investigating it as a foundation
for Web services security. I
have been excited to see case studies coming across my desk that demonstrate ROI implementing
WS-Security in ways I never even thought about. Simply
removing the administration headache of dealing with point to point ssl connections
has lowered complexity for many of our customers. Customers
love the simplicity of the WSE programming model and are continuing to choose .NET
as the development platform of choice for Web services development. This
is reflected by the recent update to the Gartner Magic Quadrant.

WS-AtomicTransaction). Also,
Policy was updated as a result of obtaining feedback from the spec workshops and from
implementation experience. It is pretty exciting to see how much traction WS-* has
and how quickly the industry is coming together to make interoperability a reality.

asked if he really meant it, Gates laughed, and confirmed he won't back off the promise.

chain scenario where a user logs into a partner company to place an order and the
order is processed via secure, reliable, transacted Web services communication to
the backend systems. They showed off
how the WS-* protocols can be composed to provide messages that are secure, reliable,
transacted, and/or any combination of these three. They
even unplugged a network cable to show the reliable messaging in action. There
was a tablet, smart clients, web browsers, trust issuing services, transaction servers,
reliable messaging infrastructure, multiple backend databases, multiple simulated
companies, and each endpoint was running either a .NET or WebSphere backbone.
