Announcing the availability of Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Vista SP2

We are pleased to announce the availability of Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 for downlevel operating systems on Wednesday, October 28th. KB969084 provides a detailed description of available functionality and provides links to the download package. This follows the previous post here that described in detail the functionality available using Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 on Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP SP3.

The Windows XP SP3 Multilingual User Interface (MUI) package release is also coming soon. Stay tuned for this announcement in a few weeks.

Update: If you have previously installed the fix in KB968358 (You cannot use a mouse to select combo box items in a RemoteApp program that you connect to through Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) 6.1), installing RDC 7.0 will undo the fix.  We'll let you know when this is corrected.

Update 2: The Multilingual User Interface (MUI) package for XP SP3 is now available for download. Please follow the KB article 969085 for package description and download information.

# re: Announcing the availability of Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Vista SP2

How can you tell wich version is RDC 7.0? If you for instance look at "Anout" on a windows 7 RC it says "6.1.7100" and a "Remote desktop protocol 7.0 supported" note.  Is it the protocol version that indicates the RDC client version? (my XP says 6.0.6001, Remote desktop protocol 6.1 supported)

In previous comment it should say "About" not "Anout". Sorry.

Please make it available on 64-bit XP client and Server 2003 (32-bit and 64-bit). At least 64-bit XP please since it's a client OS even though it's built on Server 2003 codebase. Please please please.

I second the question raised by Patric... If this is RDC 7.0 - why is the shell version listed as 6.1.7100?

Is there any time frame in fixing the issue that was addressed in KB968358?  There was an extremely long wait to get it fixed the first time.

# re: Announcing the availability of Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Vista SP2

After installing RDC 7.0 on multiple XP SP3 machines it is difficult to connect to remote app on a 2008 Standard box using a remote desktop gateway.  I continute to receive the error: Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because an error occured on the remote computer that you want to connect to. Contact your network administrator for assistance.

If I try to connect enough times it will finally let me in. Vista and Windows 7 machines can connect w/o any problem.

Removing RDC 7.0 resolves the issues that I reported above.

To answer the question about how to uninstall RDC 7.0, from Add/Remove programs, click Show updates, find Hotfix for Windows XP (KB969084), click remove.

# re: Announcing the availability of Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Vista SP2

I'm having the same problem as Neil, although going back to RDC 6.1 isnt an option as we need the Easy Print to be non-dependent on .NET.  Presumably there is a gateway configuration issue with regards to certain clients (possibly CredSSP, but couldnt get that to work), are there any suggestions?

Thanks,

Ross

# re: Announcing the availability of Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Vista SP2

Please give us back Console Access.  Things don't quite work the same with the new /admin switch, and it breaks some installation routines among other things.  It also makes remote troubleshooting difficult.  Without this, hundreds of companies will lose the ability to properly troubleshoot issues, and in some cases, even the ability to perform remote server patching, etc. which used to work just fine.

How can you tell wich version is RDC 7.0?

RDC 7.0 on XP/Vista version is 6.1.7600. "7600" is the RTM windows 7 build. Additionally, It would also say that RDP 7.0 protocol is supported.

# re: Announcing the availability of Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Vista SP2

@Gopikrishna

Yep, you're right, after upgrading RDC 7.0 you MUST enable CredSSP through the registry hack which is awful.  I am going to have to build an executable to edit these registry settings for our clients running XP SP3.

Although in the KB article which tells you how to do this (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/951608) there is also a section at the bottom which tells you how to configure Single-Sign On for XP SP3.  Does this mean it uses the web credentials or the current logged on user credentials (it makes no reference to Web Access so I presume the latter, but then that would be credential delegation rather than default credentials, confusing!?  - will test now...).

Thanks,

Ross

# re: Announcing the availability of Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Vista SP2

@Gopikrishna

Hi, sorry me again.  One thing I noticed you may be able to help with is why the MSI deployed RDP files work perfectly but when clicking on the icon when logged into RD Web Access you get the same error?

- It is as though going through the Web Access route seems to somehow ignore CredSSP (or at least the registry changes) and gives exactly the same error.

Thanks,

Ross

# re: Announcing the availability of Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Vista SP2

At least with 6.1 we could install on Server 2003 by using Compatibility Mode to emulate XP.  Now that the installer requires XP SP3, this trick no longer works.

It is a very common configuration for us to have a Server 2003 machine exposed for remote admin and to then run MSTSC to remote to resources within the client network.

Even an unofficial work-around as with 6.1 would be greatly appreciated.

I'm receiving the error:

Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because an error occured on the remote computer that you want to connect to. Contact your network administrator for assistance.

After I install RDC 7.0 on a Windows Vista machine. I'm testing remote access to our environment, so the Vista machine is unmanaged / not joined to my domain.

Obviously CredSSP is enabled in Windows Vista, so I'm not sure what else to really do. Can anyone else confirm this behavior?

Forgot to mention that I receive the above error when clicking on a RemoteApp in RDS Web Access on Server 2008 R2.

I'm executing the one-time password (OTP) scenario with ISA 2006 SP1. I'm going through RDS Gateway and Session Broker as well.

Please note this is a sample script. Hence, test this script before usage.

# re: Announcing the availability of Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Vista SP2

@Derek:

This is a bit off-topic for this post, but I am wondering if you could provide more information as to why you are looking for the console access! Windows Server 2008 onwards, there is no special session for the console (unlike server 2003, where session 0 was always console session and you could positively identify the session you want to connect to using /console).

If you could provide more information about "break in some installation routines" or provide scenario, where remote troubleshooting is difficult without physically logging onto console, that would help us understand the concern better.

I have an app which is shared via TS RemoteApp. Before TS RemoteApp, I used remote desktop to connect to server 2003 and run the app. Now I've moved the app to Server2008 with TS RemoteApp, the print alignment is off again. Took me a while to get the app printing with correct print drivers (alignment). Can anyone share how to correctly setup printers (network) to have TS RemoteApp print correctly.

# re: Announcing the availability of Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Vista SP2

Any chance this update will be resolving the issue that's existed for what seems like forever.

In more detail, if one connects to a system that's running dual monitors - all the icons on the desktops of both monitors get shifted to the main monitor and remain so, even after the session is over. Hence when the user gets back to their machine - they find all the icons on the one desktop :/

I would have thought consideration to small nuances like this would have been paid, especially since dual desktops are becoming every more prevalent.

Hope you can help.

Cheers.

# re: Announcing the availability of Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Vista SP2

Did I understand Gopikrishna correctly, meaning there will be a working way to access RDG/Win2k8 combination with the new client on WinXP SP3, WITHOUT enabling CredSSP?

Scripting the registry change really isn't something we wanna do in multiple customer domains. Extra logon-time VBS scripts always tend to add some more complexity and possible problems anyway..

I have the same problem with 6.1.7600 client on Windows XP Pro SP3 (and CredSSP enabled). I can connect a Windows Server 2003 SP2 TSE session. The desktop appears fine. But if I try to open something, I get a protocol error (without error code) and the RDP client closes. I uninstall KB696084 and everything works fine again.

Works great, Thanks!!!

Echoing the request for a work-around for Windows 2003 Server.  Our citrix servers are still 2003, application servers are 2008 and we are having occasional rdp 6.1 application errors...6.0 was a no-go (didn't work nearly so well) so we chose the unsupported variant, which works ok.  It would be really nice to use the newer client...

I have a big problem with RDC 7 for XP SP3.  It breaks TS Farm (not single TS Server) RemoteAPP SSO!!!

I was able to get farm based SSO to work after installing KB953760. But after installing RDC 7 it went back to requiring double logins! :(.  If I uninstall RDC 7 for XP SP3, the SSO to a ts farm works again.

Does anyone know how to get RDC 7.0 to work with RemoteApp SSO?

# re: Announcing the availability of Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Vista SP2

You seem to have removed one of the most useful display resolutions - 1152 x 864.  I used this all the time.  It is in version 6x but not in 7.  This res means I can have it a Window which is larger and more comfortable than 1024 x 768, yet I can see all of the remote desktop without having to maximize the Window area totally obscureing my desktop at 1280 x 1024.  This is my preferred way of working - and I suspect I am not the only one.  Please add back in to the choice of display resolutons!!!

@ Mike H - Mike, you can launch your remote desktop sessions in this resolution via:

mstsc.exe /w:1152 /h:864 /v:ServerName

I hope this helps.

# re: Announcing the availability of Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Vista SP2

I have to second Mike H's comment, 1152 x 864 is a very convenient resolution for those of us with 1280 x 1024 monitors (ie, most server monitors), and I'd very much like it back.

Patrick Rouse commented on a way to obtain that resolution via the command line, but that doesn't help folks who use .RDP file settings or who use the MMC Remote Console add-in.

# re: Announcing the availability of Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Vista SP2

RDP files are just text based connection files, with the file extension  RDP. One should be able to edit the hidden default.rdp file that's in the My Documents file to have new connections inherit this resolution, or to edit individual rdp file settings.

Your feedback on commonly used resolutions is great.  A good proposed solution (going forward) is to allow an end user or administrator to define an exact resolution via mstsc.exe, Remote Desktops MSC and GPO.  Would that help?

# re: Announcing the availability of Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Vista SP2

Problem with Windows XP Home edition retail build updated to SP3 with latest updates 11/01/10.

The problem is that when connecting through a Windows 2008 R2 RD Gateway to a Windows 2008 R2 RD Broker to the Windows 2008 R2 RDHS servers the Windows XP Home edition client  we are not able to save the credentials at logon to the RD Gateway Server and RDHS so that the user only gets prompted once for security credentials and not twice.

We have upgrade the RDP client from 6.1 in SP3 to the one listed here RDP 7.0, this caused the tick box normally to enable or disable saving credentials to disappear. After reading some of the posts we added the registry keys for credssp.dll and tspkg which restored the tick box.

Now however if you try to tick the box when and entering your credential at the authentication dialog box simply causes the dialog to re present itself with your username and blank password. This loops until you decided not to tick “save credentials” which moves you onto the next “second” authentication dialog box for the RDHS server, also with the ability to save the credentials again which if you tick also goes in a loop until you untick. Once unticked it you login as expected.

Summary:

--Windows XP Home Edition SP3, RDP 7.0, Credssp.dll & tspkg reg keys

--2 authentication dialog boxes with option to save credential

--Authentication loops unless save credentials unticked

--Logs in successfully.

Windows XP Pro Sp2+ and Vsita Sp1+ and Windows 7 works fine without issue

About the problem with  missing 1152 x 864 I found this solution....

Edit the default.rdp file in your my documents. Change the rez and save it. Next time when you start the RDP client it will default to the rez you chose.

# re: Announcing the availability of Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Vista SP2

It's really easy to install the RDP 7.0 client on Windows server 2003.

Extract the WindowsXP-KB969084-x86-enu.exe with winrar.

Open update.inf with notepad and edit

MinNtServicePackVersion   = 768

and

ThisServicePackVersion    = 768

to value 512 and save.

Then you run update.exe and save the update.inf with the restored values of 768 before you get the error message "setup could not verify the integrity of the update.inf." Depending on your machine you might need to be quick.

After saving you can click next and hey there you have RDP 7.0 ready to use in Windows server 2003.

# re: Announcing the availability of Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Vista SP2

I would like to show support for the re-introduction of the screen resolution - 1152 x 864.  As someone previously said it really is one of the most useful resolutions on the (now) standard issue 1280 x 1024 monitors we all use.  What were M$ thinking by taking it away.

Thanks Patrick for the work around, this will at least tide me over.  Please please M$ put it back as it was will you!

Thanks,

Rich.
