Is it possible to simply extract the 6.1 mstsc.exe from Vista SP1 or XP SP3 and install it on a previous version or are there additional changes to the OS made by those service packs which mean that 6.1 will never operate on any previous revision systems?

The other day I checked out Microsoft SharedView. What API does it use for screen sharing? Is it the Windows Desktop Sharing API? And a request to you to pls pls make the TS RemoteApp server available on Vista SP1 and XPSP3.

Is NLA going to be available on XP and when? Even the Mac RDP client now supports Network Level Authentication but XP's RDP 6 doesn't. Why dont you include it in XP SP3?

Right now, TS Web Access requires the Remote Desktop ActiveX control, which is only supported in IE.

Just making a second request to the one already posted.

We're wanting to demo '08 TS Features, primarily the Web Access. We've got a slough of device/software (including Cisco and Citrix) that we'd like to determine if we can move to '08 to handle it all.

Why not make the 6.1 client available to the public? If it's the only one compatible with Windows 2008 TS, what's the big security issue? Only qualified people have 2008 anyway.

Ok this is driving me nuts, installed RC0 setup RemoteAPP the same as in Beta 3 and I get the active X error on an XP client so I install service pack 3 and still no joy the same error still appears!!

Please please release the RDC 6.1 client as a seperate beta download!!

Seriously, this makes it way to hard to test. I have access to windows 2008 and can publish apps but can't test with client devices. Why would you not provide a 6.1 download for testing. If it requires SP3 it could be sometime before our enterprise would adopt this making it useless for me. As a terminal server adminstrator in our company I'm excited about the potential of 2008 terminal services but this dependancy on a service pack is a huge disappointment

My client is currently looking for a Remote App solution, I am trying my best to tempt them away from citrix but I am a little red faced when I have to explain that I cannot give a demo without putting an entire service pack on the client machine, which doesnt work anyway.

Come on MS release the client on its own! I have tried for hours to extract the required files from SP3 but no joy yet.

Tieing to a service pack was really boneheaded UNLESS it requires some other system-level stuff to accomplish what it's doing. I doubt that is the case.

Is the specification for rdp 6.1 available? Do you know of any moves to develop the open source rdp clients to be 6.1 compatible?

ICA has always been reckoned to to perform better than rdp. Does 6.1 have better performance than 6.0?

So Microsoft plugs all these new Terminal Server functions for Windows 2008 which are great so far, but they dont release the damn client to even test it. Disappointing MS! I thought when RC1 came out they would have at least let us test it that way.

Yo ! I have tried the same. Can we not download just the components required to make it work? or if it is a package that has dependencies as a separate build? This is so frustrating since I was just about to announce the completion of my POC and here I am downloading the damn SP to make it work ..

Installing XP SP3 doesn't seem to give you the ActiveX control to use Web access. It also doesn't seem to install stuff to run remoteapps. Nice to know that the two groups are talking to each other.

When you use Web Access from XPSP3, do you see a warning icon in the Internet Explorer Manage Add-Ons UI?

If you open this and enable the Terminal Services activeX control, are you then able to use Web Access?

In the mean time as a workaround can you try deleting the following registry keys:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Settings\{7390f3d8-0439-4c05-91e3-cf5cb290c3d0}

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Settings\{4eb89ff4-7f78-4a0f-8b8d-2bf02e94e4b2}

.Once you delete these keys, the activeX contro lshould be enabled in IE7.

So, this is the official Microsoft Sidetrack for people testing out the new TS functionality in Windows 2008 (RC*)?

Reading this blog i see a lot of users asking for the RDP client software and no one answering any of these questions. I had my hopes up for some kind of true web TS but at this point i feel (understatement) disappointed :-(.

What's the point in having a webbased TS solution that only works on Vista clients anyway, like all of our employees have (or even want to) Vista installed at home.

It just might be time to start looking away from MS since they don't seem to be able to provide in our day to day bussiness needs.

Upgraded my machine to XP SP3 and made the reccomended Registry changes and it works like a champ. Published applications, and tswebaccess

Teamserv, Thanks for finding a workaround. I would hope that this will be taken into consideration on the next release. Upgrading service packs is not something us admins want to do especially unless the service pack has been out for awhile and they got the bugs out of it.

Where is the 6.1 beta?

We are trying to test TSWebApp for a significant deployment. However due to the inavailability of the 6.1 client, management is asking us to abandon Windows 2008 and use Citrix instead.

We would prefer to use TSWebApp for this, but we have to be able to pilot the solution this month, and without a beta 6.1 download we can't do this.

Is there any info on the availability of a 6.1 downloadable for XP (beta or not) that we can use to hold off management forcing us to use Citrix?

deleteing these keys fixed my issue thanks, no icons would show up on the remoteapp page, the only seemed to working when browsing the remoteapp page on the actual server.

Ok folks after a few days of playing about, I have finally cracked it! and managed to install RDP 6.1 onto Windows XP SP2, the client is fully working and TSWebApps also work just fine.

I am running behind on giving a demo of this tech to my client so for now here are a couple of vids and I promise a full tutorial as soon as I get a few hours spare.

The replacement MSTSC.exe is very simple app, for some reason no matter what I did using TSWebApp always resulted in c:\windows\system32\mstsc.exe so the replacement file simply takes to the command line startup variable that is sent to mstsc.exe and passes it on to c:\program files\rdp6.1\mstscnew.exe The reason it is coded in an obscure language is because it is pretty much the only programming system I know inside out.

Hopefully I will get round to making a file in a more widely used language so people get a better grasp of what is going on.

Sorry Pierre I have never played with foreign versions of XP have you tried the procedure I outlined? It will probably make the client english but is that going to be a big problem.

Remember the procedure I outlined is purely a stop gap until MS either release the final SP3 or an official standalone client.

I installed XP SP3 and I am still unable to conntect the applications on the ts web page. I still get the "ActiveX control not installed or not enabled" but there is no activex that is disabled in ie. What else do I need to do to active, besides installing XP SP3

When I checked, the XP SP3 update did not install rdc 6.1. It shows that I have rdc 6.0.6001.16659 (longhorn_rc0.070916-1443)

David, do you have any idea why "Connect from anywhere" feature is not available in rdc3.1 installed on XP SP2 using your patch? I have get it to be working with printer redirection after installing .Net 3.0 SP1, so the only new feature I am still missing is HTTPS tunneling, which is strange, because with rdp 6.0 it worked.

Ok the remote app works and looks great with the beta sp3 and beta sp1. Nice job.

Lets say you have the guts to be an early adoptor and you want server 2008 installed and working on the day after the launch date( like me).

Is Microsoft also expecting me to put beta service packs on my clients as well as rolling out a new server out on the launch date.

If thats the case its no wonder your calling us hero's.

Please give up the active X control with the need to install a beta service pack.

Well well... backwards we go. First I try out Hyper-V to find out that no Vista additions yet and get told a hush hush we can't tell you much story. And now this. I can't test the remote apps because there is no RDC client except to install a huge SP service pack. And then there is the method to get the Vista Beta - no direct download - you have to get this update then that update. Took me ages. I am not happy! Just give us a client!

Here is what I have experienced with Server 2008 and the terminal Services ActiveX Client control issue.

On a XP machine running the older version of Internet explore (IE 6.0)

I downloaded the XP sp3 (see link)

Everything works all apps on SV TS 08 are available and I can test.

So with XP sp3 and the old 6.0 version of IE on the client you should be good.

BUT NOT with the new 7.0 version of IE.

Machines (clients) running Vista….forget about it no luck to date if one follows the sp1 link you get a “sorry” message. Try it.

“Sorry is right” What is particularly upsetting is that SV 08 and Vista are supposed to be so great together….what a pain.

Gary, the RDP client is installed with Windows Server '08. Look in Start>Programs>Accessories, or just type "Remote Desktop" in the search box.

If you're talking about logging into the WS08 server via RDP, you need to enable it. Go to Server Manager, and click on "Configure Remote Desktop".

We just installed the Windows 2008 RTM, and now our Windows CE users can't login anymore!! They get an error dialog saying: "client and server versions do not match".

Please help, some of our users can only access the server from a Windows CE client, and they are stuck now!

Of course, on the Remote tab under System Properties I enabled the second option (running any version of Remote Desktop), but still, they are not allowed in.

Please tell me there is some sort of workaround, like a registry key that I can change to still allow Windows CE clients?

2) The Vista SP1 pre-release evaluation period is now over -hence the download is no longer avialable. Once Vista SP1 RTM is avialable you will be able to use RDC6.1 from Vista SP1

We need to test Win2008 now, pushing out SP3 isn't an option for us (no telling what MS may decide to break in this release).

Hopefully MS will eventually package their on RDC 6.1 package, instead of forcing a 300+ meg download on everyone just to receive a single app.

In any case.. we appreciate the work you did in cleaning up MS's mess.

I work in education and to tell 10,000 pupils to upgrade to the latest service pack so they can remote apps is just no good enough. I can tell them to install an application but not a whole service pack. I hope you reconsider in mind of our kids education.

Have 2 machines, one with XP SP3 and one with the RDP6.1 installed as per instructions above. Both are able to run apps from TS Web Access, but not via a gateway.

I get this error:

RemoteApp

You have specified to use a gateway server, however this feature is not supported by your system configuration.

When I bring up the options for an RDP connection on the advanced tab under "Connect from Anywhere" the settings button is greyed out with the message "Connections using a gateway server are not supported by your system configuration"

I'm followed the comments of this thread to successfully get RDC functionality on both Vista and XP systems in my lab. Thanks for providing this shared experience.

This situation though is very strange as Server 2008 is now launched. How can I sell this solution to my customer who needs this exact thing right now when there isn't any released client for Vista or XP in the public realm? This is like buying a brand new Ford GT-40. Its hot, its fast, its sounds great, but the custom size tires aren't yet for sale. Huh!? Well it looks nice in the window.

Come on guys, catch up and get this RDC software out to the market before I have to quote Citrix Application Virtualization solutions.

Server 2008 Terminal services

Client: Used WinXP SP3 with IE7...installed tswebsetup.exe. Hit Tools>Internet options>Advanced>RESET and all was right with the world. All your TSWebApps show up with a refresh...The only drawback is that it pretty much blows away everything you have set up in IE (Favorites,cookies,certificates,etc.)

Still working on Vista.

So it's not supported in XP?

This is beyond stupid. I've to evaluate and present to my management by the end of the month. We use Citrix currently and I've to present on the App publishing of 2008.

We use XP SP2 and we won't be moving to SP3 for some time so if there's no client I can use for the web access we'll be renewing Citrix. Probably would have been anyway but at least MS have saved me some work by producing something that won't work with 75% of corporate desktops.

I've gone over the install/config of TS Web Access for two days and can't figure out why apps that are "published" on the terminal server are not being shown on the TS Web Access site. The TS Gateway/App event log tells me that "No programs on terminal server (it then names the TS Gateway servername)are configured to display in TS Web Access. Verify the program settings on that server." Why would it say that when thru the configuration wizard I have the proper TS Gateway identified as well as the terminal server (different server) identified? What am I overlooking? Thanks for the help.

Citrix had never bean in fear. Citrix is MS partner. There are an agreement of absense of direct compete - MS provides basic level and Citrix - advanced. That's it. Nothing more.

And anyway - current situation is a shame to MS. Where is a simple statement that RDP Client WILL be provided for most of current OS including Mac/Linux? Otherwise we all know that it doesn't cost that.

XP SP3 is officially out, it will not upgrade your IR from 6 to 7 and will allow you to connect to TS Web running on server 2008.

Does anyone know for sure if applications accessed via TS Web by more than one user at once violate the licensing agreement of that application -- i.e. running Acrobat 8 from the same sever by 2 or more people?

I reinstalled Windows XP Pro on my laptop using a slipstreamed CD with SP3. For some reason, the TS Client is not installed when you do this. It is not disabled, it is simply not installed. How can I install it?

We recently purchased new Dell Latitude D830 Vista Business laptops and found out that, at this moment, it is not possible to install Vista SP1.

Is there a possibility to install only RDC6.1 instead of the entire SP1?
