Gnomedex 3.0 Quotables

As a follow up to my last post, here are a few more quotes from Gnomedex.

Unknown audience member commenting on the use of PHP over ASP.NET for web development- "You might as well use a stone tablet to chisel out your web sites."

Speaker from the Greater Des Moines Partnership (can’t recall his name)- "We have a world-class primate facility."

Eric Sink, SourceGear- The original announcement of .NET was designed to generate "vaporious buzz".

Another one from Eric Sink- "There are more VB6 programmers on the planet than there are chickens."

Re: the PHP over ASP.net comment:

He may be right, but you might as well put a sign on your site that says "Hack Me" if you're going to run it on the Windows platform.

Oh yeah, and be prepared to spend more money...

If you're not a professional with solid skills, then I agree that Windows has historically been less secure by default than *nix boxes. That's changing though, and Windows Server 2003 is much more secure by default. All platforms have security holes.

As for spending more money, I think that depends on the scope of the development work. If you spend one week of a top developer's time more on a PHP site than an ASP.NET site, that difference alone pays for the cost of a Windows Server license.

Having said that, I think that PHP is probably right for some situations, ASP.NET for others.
