Windows Communication Foundation & Workflow Foundation Beta 2 Go Live!

Just in case you missed it ...

We've just released the "Go Live License" for WCF and WWF Beta 2. What does this mean?

The licenses that most companies include with a beta software release explicitly prohibit the use of that software in production environments. There are many good reasons for this - beta software is, after all, not necessarily yet stable enough to provide a good production experience.

However, every now and again, there are some products that come along which have been engineered to very exacting standards by highly capable teams. Sometimes, all the stars are in alignment, and by the time the product gets to beta, it's already very high-quality. Of those projects, an even smaller number might be so compelling for their target audience that the noise and clamour from potential users is so loud that it makes sense to release a great quality beta of a truly compelling app with a license that does not prohibit the use of the  technology in a production environment.

Windows Communicaiton Foundation and Windows Workflow Foundation are two such technologies.

What does this mean? You can now start building applications which, if you choose to do so, you can put into production with a pretty high level of confidence that you're going to have a good experience and that you don't have to worry about someone from Remond knocking on your door!

So, what's stopping you! [;)]

What's stopping me is that it's a CTP. Typically CTPO have ben more unstable and harder to remove than betas. Will an offical Beta2 Of Winfx be released?

Hey Lynn.

CTP's enable us to be much more transparent about the development of new technologies by giving the public much earlier access to bits as they progress through their implementation. As such, they're not subject to the same degree of quality, test, stability etc., as Betas are.

Your observation is often correct - early CTP's sometimes don't uninstall etc cleanly, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by WCF!

And to your last question: Yes, we're going to be delivering a Beta of WinFX in a few weeks. We shipped WCF Beta2 early and out-of-band because we reached our Beta2 feature & quality bar a little early!
