Welcome, Windows CardSpace & .NET Framework 3.0!

It's official:

  1. "InfoCard" has a REAL name - Windows CardSpaceā„¢.
  2. WinFX is being renamed to .NET Framework 3.0

The name CardSpace was carefully selected following much investigation, discussion, debate and consultation both inside and outside Microsoft. CardSpace conveys the core notions that this is where you store, manage, control cards which represent your personal and identity information.

The news that WinFX is being renamed to .NET Framework 3.0 should cause almost everyone to say "[Slap Forehead] About time! Thank goodness for that." And that's as it should be. .NET Framework is Microsoft's application platform and renaming WinFX to .NET Framework 3.0 is a clear affirmation of that fact.

Essentially, then it's business as usual, but now with names that will actually be around for some time to come :)

Thanks for your clarifying comments on Soma's 3.0 post, especially regarding the Windows CardSpace name.  That makes a lot more sense now.  It's also interesting that the rename still allows you to refer to the cards as InfoCards but the client-side technology as CardSpace.  This makes for a more natural transition from code-name to formal-name than the other WinFX products had.

I'm curious though, you appear to have slipped up in several of your comment posts and referred to CardSafe instead of CardSpace.  Was this just one of the candidate names, or is it an official name for something in addition to CardSpace?

ROFL! :) Ahhh ... you spotted my finger's inability to let go of the past and move on with the future! CardSafe was a name we we've been considering before moving to CardSpace.

Apologies for that! ;)

Re the names for cards: We're aiming to refer to cards primarily as "cards". Where we need to differentiate a CardSafe card from other forms of cards (e.g. ID Cards, Credit Cards, etc), we recommend "information card".

Hope this helps :)
