Firefox extension for Windows CardSpace
One of the most common questions asked about CardSpace is "does Firefox support CardSpace" (or vice-versa). Until now, the answer has been "not yet".
Today, following several weeks of hard work, Kevin Miller published an extension for Mozilla Firefox that enables Firefox to support Windows CardSpace. This is a fabulous step forward on the path of taking CardSpace mainstream and I encourage all of you Firefox fans out there to go download and install the Firefox extension and be sure to feed back your experiences so that any last remaining issues before Kevin submits the extension to Mozilla. If you're interested in reviewing or contributing to the source, Kevin has created a project for the Firefox CardSpace extension over on CodePlex and will upload the source there shortly.
Where can you test this extension? Whilst you *should* be able to login to http://cardspace.netfx3.com, there appears to be a bug (it looks like there's a bug in the Sandbox - bear with us while we work with Kevin to fix the issue), you can go and submit a card to Chuck Mortimore's Relying Party.
But what about users of other operating systems? They can't run Windows Cardspace so what do they do? Well, the Apache "Heraldry" project and the Eclipse "Higgins" project are both working on implementations of elements of the Identity Metasystem including alternative Identity Selectors. In time, they plan to release technologies that will provide a broad range of support for the Identity Metasystem on non Microsoft platforms.
I sincerely hope to see the open source community rally behind Kevin and help make his Firefox extension the approved and adopted identity selector interface for non-Microsoft browsers.
