I don't know what your relationship with MS is, but I am incredibly disappointed at the lack of XML support for Word in the new Mac Office 2004. given the above about researchers' use of Word on the Mac, I think your market research failed you--the researchers themselves might (or might not) know it, but they will need XML, far more than the average consumer. Very soon, everyone in academics will need XML support in their word processing. Maybe the Mac Office version can't hope for the extended support for external schemas of the Win 2003 Professional version, but basic support of WordML is critical. This is something I wish you'd figured out, even if you didn't have a particular response from a particular group.

Well, I'd imagine that XML functionality can be patched in to Mac Office 2004 if need be.

I'll comment more, and respond to both ideas, after Mac Office 2004 has shipped. I really can't give a complete answer until then (which is largely why I haven't blogged very much lately).
