Team Foundation Server with SQL Server Technology

Team Foundation Server includes a limited license (only for use with Team Foundation Server) for SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition. When you purchase Team Foundation Server at retail (boxed product), you should receive media for both Team Foundation Server and SQL Server 2005.

If you download Team Foundation Server Trial or Workgroup Edition from MSDN Subscriber Downloads (or Volume Licensing Downloads), you must also download SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition separately. It is not included in the same disc image as Team Foundation Server, which is only 448 MB. The SQL Server Standard Edition DVD alone is 891 MB.

In addition, you should not use SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition with Team Foundation Server since SQL Server Developer Edition is licensed only for development, test, and demo use. Although you’re likely using Team Foundation Server to develop or test an application, Team Foundation Server uses SQL Server Technology in a production capacity.

this isn't the first post i see that mentions tfs is available on msdn. i think i've seen this mentioned the first time on friday. well - i can't find it. where is it? it's listed under developer tools, nor in the 'latest additions' section.

are you sure it's already available on msdn ?

I downloaded both the Trial and Workgroup Editions, so I know it's there. I found them both under Developer Tools - Visual Studio 2005 - English - Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server. Do you have Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite (or a role-based edition) with MSDN Premium Subscription?

Does that mean we can't use the Workgroup edition of Team Foundation Server without a commercial license for SQL Server Standard edition?

Anthony, Team Foundation Server (Workgroup & Standard Editions) includes a limited-use license for SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition. I'm not 100% sure which SQL Server you are supposed to use with Trial Edition, but I'll find out.

Regarding SQL Server - or better: the Team Foundation Data Tier. Is SQL Server 2005 x64 Edition running on W2K3 x64 Edition supported by the Team Foundation Data Tier?

Hi Rob,

The server I have earmarked for TFS currently provides a sharepoint document repository. I understand TFS wants the sharepoint configuration DB on the same SQL Server 2005 instance. Is it okay to use sharepoint running on this 'limited license' SQL 2005 instance for non-TFS content? Is the license text available on the TFS Workgroup install CD or somewhere on msdn?
