A Comprehensive Visual Studio 2008 Product Comparison

See: Updated: Visual Studio 2008 Product Comparison

I just finished working on a very comprehensive product comparison of the Visual Studio 2008 product line. It only covers the IDE products, which means it doesn't include stuff like Team Foundation Server or Test Load Agent.

It covers:

  • Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition
  • Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition
  • Visual C# 2008 Express Edition
  • Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition
  • Visual Studio 2008 Standard Edition
  • Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition
  • Visual Studio Team System 2008 Architecture Edition
  • Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition
  • Visual Studio Team System 2008 Development Edition
  • Visual Studio Team System 2008 Test Edition
  • Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Suite

Since I'm only human and this thing is massive, I'm sure there may be a mistake or two. If you spot anything that is in error (actually validated, not speculated), please let me know. I'm also in the process of publishing a downloadable document version of the entire chart.

Here's where you can find it: Visual Studio 2008 Product Comparison.

Update: Here are some downloadable versions (DOCX/XPS/PDF): Visual Studio 2008 Product Comparison downloads.

Hey I downloaded a Word document of that comparison....thanks a lot for that comparison...great job...helps a lot in making which SKU to buy..looks like there are some feature changes between SKUs from 2005 but it is largely similar. I noticed in "Data-Related Tools" section, the Team Suite does not contain a (.) for "Database Project" while lower SKUs do which I think *may* be an error. I just wish Standard edition had VSTO.

The Database Project project template doesn't appear in Database Edition or Team Suite. The Database Project works directly against a SQL Server, but the database projects in Datbase Edition and Team Suite work with offline representations of a database.

I noticed that the chart says the standard edition can do remote debugging. Is this something that has changed in 2008, because I didn't think 2005 standard could do that.  It would be fantastic if it could though - I could save on my licensing costs. :)
