I’ve had a Windows XP machine in my car for a little over a year now. Some people think putting a PC in a car is absolutely crazy. Well … Sometimes I think that too. But … It’s been up and running pretty reliably now for over 9 months.

“Why, Rob, would you put a PC in your car?”

That’s a good question. There’s a simple answer, really: Because I can! Actually, that’s not really true, but it sounded good.

I’ve got a PC in my car for the main purpose of letting me listen to whatever songs I want to in high quality whenever I want. It takes me about 30 minutes to commute to work and then another 30 minutes going home. Radio stations around here are OK, but they play way too many commercials. Instead, I have 5000+ tracks of music in my car, enabling me to listen to anything I want.

XP is good and all, but my goal when I started this “car based PC” project a year ago was to eventually put the new version of Windows in my car. Then I’ll be able to use the cool new features in Windows Vista, specifically, Speech Recognition, hands free in my car.

Next week, I’m finally taking the plunge and I’ll be self-hosting Windows Vista in my car!

I’ll let you know how that works out…
